Anybody Know What Kind Of Mushroom This May Be
    #4389469 - 07/10/05 10:15 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I found this mushroom in southern Pennsylvania on July 9 2005, it was found in a grassy area in a primarily wooded area. In other words it was on my sand mound in the middle of a mountain. Altitude is approx. 1200-1500ft. The underside is mostly white with vary small pores. Each leafy section seems to have its own stem that meet at one point to form one stem which was at ground level & below. The mushroom seems firm but not hard or leathery. It smelled similar to button mushrooms you buy in the grocery store but not exactly. I did not have a chance to take a spore print yet. I'm not familar with this species but from all the ID books I have it looked similar to grifola frondosa, but it said that it fruits mostly at the base of trees & from september to late autumn. I have pictures, sorry about the one that is alittle blurry. Hopefully I'll upload them properly, this is my first picture post.

looks like grifola frondosa (hen of the woods, maitake). It must have been fruiting from some buried wood or root. It's surprising that its coming up- form what I know this is an autumn, even late autumn mushroom, one of the last edibles you can find during the year in my area. nice find- if they are maitakes, they are delicious and healthy in many ways.

Here is the spore print. Sorry about the quality, I know its really crappy. The spore print is white eventhough it doesn't look pure white in the picture.

It might also be Black Staining Polypore, Meripilus sumstenei.
Ussually the leaves are bigger than Hen of the Woods, sometimes they
look exactly like them.
