Compost Question
    #4388356 - 07/10/05 01:02 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hey y'all, I was thinkin bout sumthin and thought I would run it by y'all. About 10 months ago (before I knew much bout growin) my neighbor gave me about 50 pounds dry aged horse poo and I thought it would make great soil for my garden so I started a compost pile. Now since then all I have put in there is egg shells, corn cobs, spent cakes and casings, and various fruits and vegetables. Could I pasteurize and use this just like horse poo? Also I've heard compost is better than poo, is this true?
Thanks

It contains about 4 times the nutrients as poo.

Compost concentrates nutrients for use by the mushroom and exhausts nutrients favored by competitors.  It also removes the heat generating capabilites of the substrate. Guess that would help out with the fermenting that peeps encounter now and then. Maybe it can be incubated with the rest of my stuff instead of needing two incubating area's now.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Thats what I was thinking.... maybe even just throw a few good cakes on there for the hell of it. I would find it hard to beleive that you wouldn't get any mushrooms eventually. I have found multiple strains of mushrooms coming out of straw bales sitting in peoples gardens. If you build it they will come...

You want to make sure the compost you will be using hasn't decomposed to where it looks like dirt.. It should still be fibrous.
