mycobag rdy to plant?
    #4387318 - 07/09/05 04:27 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hello shroomery! I have started my first grow with something similar to the mycobags.I dropped the spores in roughly 30 days ago and mycelium growth has been good and the rye berries were fuzzy white on the outside and looked ready to plant. I shook the bag up a little today and broke the rye berries up and found that many of the individual berries on the inside are not completely white although there are big chunks of rye berries held together by the mycelium. I fear waiting too long and the mycelium turning yellow and going bad :/ Should I plant now, or wait for the bag to be covered entirely in white mycelium again? Thx, Dun.

By "planting," do you mean casing? The answer IMO opinion is to wait longer and get full myc colonization. What temperature are you colonizing at?

yes, by planting I mean casing. I'm keeping it in the far room of my apartment which happens to be the most humid. It's usually around 75-80? in there.

Optimal colonization temps are around 82-84, and the fluctuation in your temps may be what is slowing down your colonization. However, 30 days is awhile, and as much of a worry as contams is drying out. The nutrients are usually still there long after the moisture is gone, thus all the posts talking of dunking and watering to keep casings moist and water going to the sub. I would still wait a bit longer, but if you need to, I have taken colonized sections of stalled sub and broken them up in casing. I was very careful to grab only the colonized material to eliminate as many contam possibilities as possible. However, you should know that after the second flush I did get contams, and typically I get at least four flushes, and that was also the first time I have ever had contamination. Were they related? I don't know for sure...perhaps someone who is an expert in this could answer that question. I am still a young jedi I am afriad.

Yes, I think I will wait one more week to case. Also, I have just noticed that a lot of the rye berries have a little blue in them. Not green or black, but the bluing you would see in a bruised mushroom. Is this normal, or a possible contam?

If mycelium starts to turn yellow, is it going bad? Or is it just maturing to the point where it starts pinning? A certain 'someone' i know has a myco-bag that is completely white, but also has yellow in it as well.
