Help me ID this northwest shroom
    #4386766 - 07/09/05 02:14 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everyone, my first post here.

It rained rather heavily last night so i decided to go poking around in the cow field next to my house. I found a few batches of shrooms.

Ok i did not find these mushrooms growing in manure, but off the side of the field in a densely wooded area (mulch, moss, damp like) on the forest floor next to moss covered rotting trees. The batches that i found were withered, black oozed caps. I managed to find one semi intact specimen. Underneath these withered batches of shrooms, was a young fresh batch growing underneath. The matured shrooms were 4-5 inches tall.

I have taken some pictures im attaching. No bluing of any kind that i can see on this one specimen i grabbed. The caps outer color is a brownish grey, stem is white. Gills are a dark brown color, with a very dark brown (could be black?) print.

Pictures arent so great, took them with a pda, and date is off. This one specimen was sheltered by the other wilting shrooms, and the small ones are what is growing out of under it.

Any tips on ID would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you live?
dung loving [active] psilocybes dont grow in most places that could be called "north west".

EDIT: errrr sorry, i forgot about Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Coprinus is what you've found.

They decompose into goo in a matter of days, they are inedible and some slightly poisonous.

Northwest as in northwest united states, Idaho. Not exactly the right time of year for anything good, im aware. Still hoping to kick across some pan subbs tho.

Thanks for the ID SweetLeaf, sounds like them! Im gonna go back out there now and look around for anything else.

Milkman, there are active dung species in my area. Im right next to washington/oregon 200 miles from canadian border.

Next time I need assistance with an ID ill be sure to arrange my post properly as well.

Thanks!
