The Lone Pan Subb
    #4386624 - 07/09/05 01:17 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Lately I've found solitary mushrooms here and there that I believe to be Panaeolus subbalteatus in my lawn. Here is one of these mushrooms.

Location: NW corner, CT, lawn.
Height: 55mm
Cap: 15mm diameter, dark tan to light tan to brown rings.
Gills: attatched, tan.
Stem: 3mm diameter, light tan to brown in bruised areas.
Spore: Working on it.

Is it normal to find Pan subbs alone in different sections of lawns?

If the gills hang below the edge of the cap it's not a subb right?

Well it depends on how dark of a tan do you consider brown, but I am actually leaning to that it is not a Pan subb, the print is dark but not black. I'm almost 95% sure now that there arn't any subbs in my lawns just a bunch of foes. This mushroom did look alot like a subb though. Maybe only differnet by subbs having a thicker more reddish stem?

Thanks for showing me that picture, I had already been to that post but not lately (I was on before that picture was up) and remember reading about the vertical lines but didn't exactly understand. After reading it a while ago I went out and looked at some Panaeolina foenisecii and looked for vertical lines on the stem and I thought I saw some. I'll look closer next time, and where the stem attatches to cap, since i was only looking at the general stem area.

Yeah it is weird when they're suposed to be growing in tight clusters. I've yet to find a nice patch.
