housing costs in vancouver...

for anybody who happens to live there, how does $7080 (canadian) sound for a years rent in the city? it's some kind of 'student-housing', but i couldn't stand to live in 'dorm' type housing, esp considering i did that for 2 years in norway, and will be a good 2-3 years older than all the other incoming students - so instead i've applied/received an offer for sharing a 4-bedroom flat ('marine drive', if anybody happens to know it). each flat has it's own kitchen, utilities and internet included, and is furnished... i tried doing a bit of research on the net for housing in vancouver and this seems to be fairly reasonable to me, esp. for a place in the center of the city. any info/advice?

mmmmmmmmm... are you saying that for $7080 you could have a whole flat to yourself?
University housing is nearly ALWAYS an ungodly ripoff.

for $7080 CAD i get a bedroom in a 4 bedroom flat for 1 year...
i figured it might be a bit of a rip-off, but can't really be bothered to try to find myself alternative housing when i'm in denmark right now and wouldn't be able to go see any places. next year would be a different story, as i'd have a year to find some connections/know where the best places to live are/etc... but for this year, it seemed fairly reasonable to me.

they have this 'coordinated arts program' - so i'm focusing on philosophy, political science, and economics. i think i'll end up majoring in philosophy and political science, and getting a minor in economics and danish (danish should be really freaking easy, seeing as how i'm fluent in it )

good majors.
<-- poli sci/philosophy dual major!
School housing is usually expensive, 7080 doesn't sound too bad... but i live in the bay area so everythings expensive. Anyone from vancouver care to chime in?

check out
http://vancouver.craigslist.org/ and http://apartmentguide.ca/
if you haven't already. what you posted works out to $590 a month which is pretty good for the area you mention and considering it's shared, it's probably right there by UBC too. I pay $840 a month for a studio near downtown and that's a good deal considering my location (blocks from english bay/stanley park ect) you could get a place on the east side for $300 and up, for you own place, but in some of the not so great neighborhoods. areas to look into imo would be kitsilano, westend, and commercial drive. if you have any questions about neighborhoods or anything else give me a pm or post here
