panaeolus subb. ID help
    #4384852 - 07/08/05 06:24 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I found some LBM's on my lawn today (I live on Long Island) They grew in small clusters of 3-10. I have ID'd them as Panaeolus subbalteatus (the caps match the pics in mushroom john's gallery; they have hollow, red-brown, fuzzy stems; attached, dark brown gills; black spore prints).
But, in the groups with these mushrooms grew what looked like a nearly white variety of the same species. The spore prints matched those of the normal colored mushrooms. Do mushrooms of the same species come in different colors?

Thanks for any advice!

It sounds more like you have foensecii than subbs but if you have a well fertilized lawn make sure the prints are in fact jet black not dark brown. Yes, it's possible there could be color variation due to aging and what not.

you could have foenisecii, but the black spore prints indicate panaeolus species. You probably do have subbs, and the white ones are a white-ish grey are they not? this happends to mushrooms after they start to dry - the sun plays a big part in that.

You also mentioned a redish brown stem, fiberous stem, which, I believe, is a trait unique to pann subbs, and not found in pan foens.
Cool shit.

wow, thank you all!
One more question about my mushrooms, the gills are attached (adnexed), but they are not descending the stalk. In the Audubon guide, it is mentioned that P. subb. has descending gills. But the pictures I have seen don't appear to have decending gills...
Advice on gills is appreciated, and sorry if I seem nitpicky, but I do like being alive and such.

Also check to see if the gills hang below the cap. (*edit - they shouldnt be doing this, BTW)

Pan Subbs rarely ever stain blue, so that shouldnt be much of an issue there. There is a possibility that you have some pan foes mixed in there. Those arent toxic though, so its not really a big deal if you eat them anyway.

Some pictures could help us confirm, but it sounds like Pan Subbs to me based on the description. Just I wouldnt be suprised if some foes were mixed in there due to the fact that it was picked from a lawn.
