Pint Jars vs. 1/2 Pint Jars
    #4384989 - 07/08/05 07:09 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering what the timeframe that you start seeing mycelium if you use pint jars instead of half pint. I am going to be switching over to half pint jars after this batch, but I would like to get the most out of these.

Currently I'm on day three and the jars (lipa yai from hawkseye) are not showing any myce growth, which is fine I suppose. I used approx. 4-6ccs of spore solution per jar.

Will post pictures if needed. Thanks in advance.

I'm probably just thinking the worst, but would like some professional opinions.

Time to see mycelium is based on amount of spore solution or liquid culture and temperature, not container size. However, using different sized jars will affect your colonization times by a great deal, because obviously there is more substrate to colonize. Does that help?

Yes thanks. Since I used alot of spore solution I should be seeing myce hopefully in the next 2 days. My setup could use some work though. I need to get the temperature of the jars to around 80 and currently its probably more like 68. I suppose that would hamper it.

Well, be careful with using lots of spore solution. More times than not it just ends up oversaturating your substrate, and then you'll really have colonization problems. Too much spore solution = not ideal.

I use about 2...to 2.5 ml per quart jar.

Big spawn bags & LC, I use a tad more per quart of spawn wbs/grain.

Mycelium (spawning) and spores are very different.

Lots of spores = Messing with water content
Lots of LC (live myc.) = Quicker colonization....

1/2 pints will always colenize faster asumeing all the ratios are the same (with spore syringes this would be impossible unless you can see how meny spores are injected in to each jar and the strains were the same then theres that whole every shroom is its own strain question that i dont fully understand). to answer your question with out reading any of the other replys i would say that the would colenize at the same rate if they are the same strain with the same dna. Furthermore i would like to explain that myc will grow at the same rate in theory no matter how big of jar you wanted to knock up. The biger the jar the more chances of stalling and contams bad airexchange all these things get to be more important the biger the jar.

You only need a little tiny bit of myc in the jar to do the trick, otherwise, the extra liquid messes up the moisture level and it could take longer. If you want speed, use rye and shake the jar every day. Spreads like mad! Than you can transfer spoonfuls to other jars, starting them, all together much faster. Then you can do gallon jars...... bwa ha ha ha, my evil plan is... ops, I mean, er like that.
