what to do with my pedro pups
    #4383669 - 07/08/05 01:37 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

ive got a pedro about 12 inches tall
it looks like the growth area on the top got destroyed somehow
and it put out 2 pups, coming out the very top of it
they are about 3 inches tall, and 1 inch wide.

Should i let the little guys finish out the summer like they are?

Would they do better if I cut them off and started them on their own, would that help them out next summer?

How low could I cut off the 12 incher?
Will the base just put out some more pups next summer?
I might as well just cut it off cause the tip is messed up and it has to put out pups anyways, is this correct?

basicly, id just like to expand my cactus garden a little
and im wondering if it would be a good idea to it this summer.

does this sound like a good plan?
--cut the pups off and root them,
--cut the 12 incher off at the base and re-root it

then I have 4 pedros, and possibly multiple pups next summer.

haha
sorry for the grip of questions
im new to cactus cult.
and i just don't want to hurt the little guys

I just posted a great read for HT and his cacti, check it out about 4 or 5 posts down from this thread. It tells all about rooting cuttings, optimal growth for trichocereus, etc etc. It really depends on if you want to wait for the cuttings to heal before planting them or if you want them to continue growing right now by leaving them attached.

yea i read that, thanks
thats what got me thinking about this

im about half way through summer
i wont have to bring them in untill oct. or nov. though

when is the best time to take cuttings.

would i be better off cutting them now, and getting them rooted this summer. So they can take off next summer and maybe i could get some new pups next summer?

I say they're too small.

Long cuttings develop good root systems faster and will grow much better than small cuttings.

In absolute terms, you'll have more cactus mass sooner if you let them attached to their 'mother' for the rest of this season (and eventually the next) and only than cut them off.

I personally wouldn't cut them until they're at least 12 or so inches.

My pedros grow faster the bigger they are. You might have more plants if you cut and callous off your pups....but they will take longer to reach any stature. A few of my pedros got their tips damaged from frost. They turned black on the tip. A few months later they pupped out vigorously from the spot where frost damage occured.

alright, i'll leave them alone till they get bigger.

I have a torch that is about 18 inches or so.

What is the best time of the year to take a cutting?
What is the minimum size cutting that you want to take from the top to re-plant?

Can i take a cutting from the top and re-plant it, do with the middle as i please, and leave the base to produce more pups?
Does that sound like a good idea?

thanks alot

Where I live it is hot and dry during the summer so I make my cactus cuts when it is very dry. That way they callous off quicker and are less likely to rot. Whenever I harvest cuttings I replant the grow tip which is at least 6 inches long. I also leave a good sized base for new pups to spring out of.I have heard of people grafting the tip back onto the base....however that is beyond me at the moment and I get the results I want by the method I mentioned.
