blue oysters aren't blue
    #4383525 - 07/08/05 12:52 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I just saw a picture online of some blues that were almost an electric/metalic blue, mine only have a hint of blue in them which is basically a smoky grey, is this because i'm growing indoors? substrate? what?

You know, I had the exact same problem, and it was disappointing! The primordia were bright blue, but as they matured, they became almost white. I believe this is genetics related. I've seen beautifully colored blues from fungi perfecti grown out by a friend, but I didn't get a clone!

I really only grew the strain out once, was disappointed, and went on to try others...why do you ask? Experience here?

in my experience the fruiting temp had the most effect on color. The cooler the room was 60- 70 f, the darker blue they stayed, i once put a little too much powdered bleach in the humidifier, and an entire flush faded to white.

The Blue Oyster that I know of is "Pleurotus var. Columbinus".
The ones I grew out had Blue pins but the mature fruits were either brown or white-Yes! They varied in color and both were fruited using the same substrate(WBS/Straw)and both were the same culture.

But they were definately fun to grow and well worth the flavor.

I would post pics, but I have already used up my limit.

Mine were also columbinus, with the exact same results, but, they were grown in the spring in Florida, with no ambient controls on temp (just nature!). Definitely still fun to grow!

sorry for the delay, but yes that is what i mean, I have a hunch it is related to quality uv rays as my spent substrates of pheonix that fruited outside had much more color than my indoor pheonix.
