scientology
    #4381850 - 07/08/05 12:30 AM (12 years, 21 days ago)

up until very recently i knew absolutely nothing about this religion except that for some reason it had a very bad reputation. i did a little reading about their beleifs and it sounded like a wacky rehash of other religions with a little sci fi twist, however on the plus side it seemed very similar to eastern religions in that it stressed self mastery. this brought me to question why do the specifics matter so much so long as they help to acheive their goal? i mean even if scientology is complete BS, if it helps someone reach a higher state of self understanding can you really say it was wrong for them? i mean as long as self understanding is the goal, anyone who truly achieves it will be able to see through the false parts of the religion that helped him get there.

They lie about medical facts, encouraging people to do risky things like immediately stop taking certain drugs. They intimidate and harass the people who disagree with them. They call themselves a science when they clearly aren't.

Also, your friends and family will all worry about you and think you're being really flaky and dumb.

Its like a geek's dream religion...except it seems to attract a lot of rich celebrities looking to be a part of something 'cool'.

Their prophecies talk about Aliens coming and whatnot. And Hubbard lived out in his Naval ORG base for who knows how long. It was a bed of ideas turned into beliefs by cult fans.

Then again, I'd laugh of the second coming of christ was through a UFO drop-off. I've been hearing weird stuff about aliens and religion lately.

it preys heavily on peoples' insecurity of their own intelligence, and it digs deeply into their pocketbooks operating using a pyramid sales type of brotherhood

many organized religions might wish to be so devious, & as it happens most are

I wouldn't  be surprised if the pyramid scheme was  developed within the christian religion. :mushroom2:

And this is what I like about being a SubGenius, an inherently  bogus parody religion created in the early 80's by a bunch of ex-hippies who had done one too many hits of of acid back in the 60's. It's screed is so patently absurd and ridiculous that no one in his or her right mind could possibly take it seriously. (Interestingly enough, Pat Robertson once called it "the most dangerously subversive group in America today", which should tell you something about 'ol Pat  ).

A religion whose members consist of scoffers, blasphemers and the just plain weird, we'll let ANYONE join, as long as "Bob" see their 30 bucks. Shit, you could fuck goats for all we care! Plus, we offer TRIPLE your money back if you don't receive eternal salvation! I'd like to see any other religion make THAT claim! We're also the first "fun" religion to ever exist, and Bobdamnit, we're fucking proud of it too! We're the PREMIER LUNATIC SAUCER DEATH CULT OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM! EIEIEIEI!

Also, not only is slacking encouraged, IT'S PART OF OUR DOCTRINE AND IS MANDATORY! In fact, obtaining the mystical state of SLACK is a sure sign "Bob" likes you - or hates you. I'm not too sure about that. I think he stole my wallet a while back, so I'm still rather pissed about that, but I digress. But really, how cool is THAT? (The Slack part, not the wallet thing)

Read the sacred text here. DO it. DO IT NOW! You know you want to!  :tongue2:

Praise Bob!! I was made an honorary SubGenius.. Didn't cost me a cent. The people that host the local SubGenius show just like my slack-filled computerized cut-ups, and incessant raving on the virtue of the psilocybin molecule..

Subgenius makes me proud.

Simulataneously an assault on religion, a post-acidy homage to the punk aesthetic, and the final and most important step backwards for humankind.

Impose slack upon your neighbours. Sacrifice your dignity for Bob.

Exactly! But a step forword for the Yeti, and a blow to the CONSPIRACY!

Quote:

No, we cannot impose SLACK upon anyone but the chosen. SLACK can only come when when "Bob" see your 30 bucks. And even then it's "iffy", but I have found the practices of Excremeditation, Pornological Dementertainment and the mastery of the Stoogly Arts to be efficacious in bringing about the mystical state of SLACK! But we do not sacrifice our dignity to "Bob" - we make EVERYONE else do that. In fact, we're required to shoot "Bob" on sight! But alas, you are a mere hyoo-man pink boy, and thus, if you comtemplate these things too much, you will no doubt go INSANE! But always remember - YOUR KIND WILL NOT PREVAIL!
