12 brf cakes were started about 30 days ago, 6 of the jars colonized 2 weeks ago and were cased with 50/50+. recently the other 6 jars colonized and when they were removed to dunk and then fruit as cakes, two of the cakes had some weird growth on them.
The first cake had some rusty looking mark that looked like a watermark or something. The jars were in the incubator for over 4 weeks. when the cake was taken out of the jar, the rust mark felt gooey and it went about 1 inch in depth into the cake. should the whole cake be tossed or just cut out the weird part? or is that normal?
On the other cake, on the bottom of the cake there was a thin layer of green. While the jar was incubating the jars where with the lid facing down and there was some water condensation that would buildup and drip from the inside-top part of the jar onto the top of the cake. should it be tossed too?

The top one looks like bacteria to me...not 100% on that.
The bottom one looks like bruising to me...not 100% on that either but bottom one definatly looks more normal to me...if it were me I'd probably toss the top and keep the bottom.

The top one...I don't know.
The bottom one... You could rub it with a Q-tip dipped in H2O2 and see if anything comes off. If it does it's bad, if it doesn't it's probably just bruising. But it does look like just bruising IMO.

One of my jars looked exactly like the top one , I squirted too much liquid culture into it and water gathered in one spot causing it to look just like that.

Yeah.. i remember that while inoculating one of the jars, the syringe got stuck and when it got unstuck it squirted a whole cc into one of the holes of the jar. i don't know if that was the one tho. Also, before dunking the cake i tried removing the rusty looking part of the cake and i think i shouldn't have.. will the cake still work with a little chunk ripped out of it?
the other cake with blue tine turned out to be bruising cuz it wont wipe off to a q-tip

give it time and isolation. make it a "mini" terranium. who knows, there may be some good times in that cake. myc. is a living organism and it can repair itself.
