How To Scrape A Casing?
    #4380006 - 07/07/05 01:51 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Everything I've read in the casings section says that scraping is something that should be done after the first or second flush but as fas as I can tell there is no mention of HOW TO SCRAPE! How much should I take off the top? With what instrument? And so on... thoughts?

Casings should not just be scraped after the first and second flush...they should only be scraped if needed, if the casing layer is getting overlaid..even then it should only be done lightly. Use a sterile fork and lightly rub it around over the top to disturb the surface, not even 1/8 of an inch down, just get the top layer of mycelium mat (overlay) off, and add some fresh casing mix.

Casings should only be scraped as a last ditch effort to get it to pin if it is severely overlayed. That means if it's like concrete on top and won't pin when it should be.

Hmm... it's not like concrete at all. It's just... well, nothing really. There's been a flush and a half and some aborts. Hyphal knotting is minimal at best. Moisture is good, fanning could be better but it's alright. All this and yet no new pins. Frankly, the whole casing looks brown, really, with a few aborts scattered around.

I've had much better luck with straight cakes. What am I doing wrong?

Would need to know the facts of substrate, spawn, casing material, incubation & conditions - before I could even venture a guess - as to whats wrong.
