First timer, needs advice.
    #4379902 - 07/07/05 03:22 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have a quality syringe and this is my first time growing mushrooms. I need a discrete and easy way to grow this with limited resources and househeld items. Anyone have any advice, it'd be much appreciated.

I have read the growing FAQ but wish for some further instruction. Could I just use plastic containers with llama manure as a substrate and then just put it outside?

Outside is an uncontrolled environment with many contaminant hazards. As for being discrete, use your common sense. When incubating the mason jars don't put them where anyone could just stumble across them. If you have company coming over, throw a blanket over your fruiting chamber and put books and stuff on it so it doesn't attract wandering eyes.

As for cheap materials, WalMart and Home Depot are your two best friends. Use bleach and water to sterilze surfaces. Pressure cook your jars. Use a rubbermaid bin for the fruiting chamber, with holes for gas exchange (put polyfil in the holes though, contams SUCK). Also, it might help to make a list of specific questions you have, and then use the forum's handy dandy SEARCH feature. If there's one thing I've learned, if you're having a problem with your grow there's a 100% chance someone else has had it before you, and a 95% chance someone started a thread about it.

As for llama manure, I have no idea. But 50/50 horse manure/straw works for sure, so you might like that better.

That link doesn't work.

I am in the same situation as the initial poster. I'll get my free serynge from spores 101 any day now. I can't get brown rice flour and I don't really know what to think about the popcorn method. I don't have a pressure cooker and I'm afraid the popcorn woul just break the jar when it expands. I'm thinking about bird food or such.

I also want to grow separately some mycelium (very much, tons of it) and I don't have agar eighter. I thnk this is a great ideea (even if "I'm a noob) and that I'll be able to inocculate as many jars as I will desire, and I don't think it's too complicated eighter.

I'll research this further but I'd very much appreciate any help in this two matters since the material to read is enormous and not allways easy to comprehewnd. Btw, could anyone tell me what a flush is? You fruit the same cake more times. How do you do that, you just harvest and leave it to grow further?

Why don't you guys just try Myco-bags? You can do every thing in them and all you need is......well nothing.

You can't do grains without a PC. If you're asking what a flush is, I'd recommend more reading.

Do a search on karo, its just a solution of corn syrup and water that you can use to grow mycelium.

why on earth do you want to grow tons of mycelium phoenix. a small jar is enough for roughly 50 innoculations and mycelium isnt a good way to trip at all, so i see no need for TONS of it.

I don't think I can get brown rice eighter. And I just told my mom they're normal mushrooms and I would like to grow some. I have a passion for cacti too.

Oh, I didn't see your post lemon_lw. Yeah, 50 sounds ok. Then I want to grow one little jar of mycelium. I can't see the harm in growing more though. I could inject more when I inoculate and thus have quicker results.
I was thinking about simply water and dextrose. Would it work?

man if you live in the US, live near almost ANY grocery store(or walmart), you can find whole brown rice. Shit costs like 97 cents a bag, it is NOT a specialty item (BRF maybe).

Start growing edible mushrooms. (they all look the same to outsiders) Than find a health food store and stock up on stuff like rye. Learn all about contaminates. Get a low cost pressure cooker!!!!! Don't eat anything with contams in it!!!! I bought a 4 quart Presto, stainless steel! (not a mirro from walmart). Learn more about contams. Try Oyster and Nameko. (namekos look enough like active mushrooms to give cover and they taste SOO good! not raw mind you, they make your tongue go numb raw) This way, everyone will think you are a wierdo and leave you alone, which is good. Cook up some shatakis every now and than for the family and pretend you grew em. You are going to have to take over the kitchen anyway, and have glove boxes sitting around and bags of brf and a 25 lb block of vermiculite. (ya know how big a 25 lbr. of vermiculite is? To do this, you will have to learn tons of stuff anyway, most of which is stick with it and figure it out. It all sounds so simple til you are looking at a bottle of bacillius which stunk up the whole house. It is hard enough that even edibles are exciting when something works. What are you waiting for? Life is short, grow mushrooms! They will figure something is up when you are madly cleaning the whole house like an operating room, trust me! Oh, ya, for advice, DONT DATE GIRLS with TATOOS that say "I will never kill again". See ya!

honestly, if it werent for the fact that my parents are so cool i couldnt do this at all...... but like red said, take an honest intrest in growing all types of mushrooms.... and when you add some "special" ones into the mix noone will be the wiser... you should see my kitchen when i get going...... the first time my rents walked in and i was PC'ing, i had my still air box with my mask on, gloves... well you get the idea... lol they were completely speechless.
