Electricity and mycellium? UPDATE and QUESTION
    #4379297 - 07/07/05 12:18 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Alright...here is a new one, and searching came up with nothing on this, so I am relying on some of you experienced, advanced mycologists (Agar, Roadkill, Diver, Hippie Chick, Gnostic, etc.). I hope you can help.....if you can't I will just wait and see. So here is the deal.....Hawaiins spawned to poo and cased with 50/50 layer in fruiting chamber, and today (24 hours after initiating fruiting) I discover as I am handling the casing pan that there is a small electrical charge going through it. A closer look nets me the sad truth...my submersible has cracked and electricity has been coursing through my casing pan and the water underneath Although the pan is not in the water, it appears that the bricks I have the casing pan sitting on are acting as a sort of conductor and spreading some of the current there as well. Am I dead in the water? I have already replaced the heather with a backup and it is now working fine.....just wondering if I have now killed the fungi. My thanks in advance to you all.

I have no idea if an electric current will kill your mycelium.

Electrical stuff isn't in my field of expertise.

Plumbing and pipe fitting, welding and metal work is.

sorry!~

unplug it from the wall...before messing with it.

I know that much.

Wow, this is a first for me lol...never seen anyone had this problem before, I've seen just about every problem I had thought lol....just wait it out and see...I'd guess it'll be fine since it wasnt physicaly burnt or destroyed from it (right?)...not like it has a heart or brain or organs to stop when the electricity hits, so it wouldnt kill it the same as us.

yah, but dont forget electricity creates heat. It's energy. Im sure the current wasnt strong enough, but, electricity can boil water. Mushies are 90% water.... Im sure they're fine, id check to see if the substrate was a little dried out tho.

Sub seems fine, and there didn't seem to be any significant heat...who knows...maybe I have stumped the Shroomery? LOL..doubt it.

Well, also, if you're using something that doest conduct electricty to hold your casing then you're also not putting them at much risk. But i wouldnt go sticking some bare wires directly into your substrate either :P

I experimented with this about 3 years ago... (the experiment was spawned from trying to humidify my terrarium by throwing 2 electrical currents in a jar of water with some steel wool to create bubbles and therefore also humidity) It ended up stalling myc growth, then i found out the current was going through all the substrate. The myc started growing again when i removed the experiment. It had electrical current running through it for 1 week.

The electrical current just stalled all processes of the fungi, but did not seem to hurt it.

Call or Write a letter to the company that made this faulty piece of equipment and inform them that their heater has malfunctioned and killed all three of your rare exotic fish (around $600 per fish) and you need to be paid for monies lost or else.

no it wont hurt them since it was a weak current if anything it would have stimulated them no worrys im great in the fields of electricty but this is a new one for me.it being 110!!!!220 would have burnt your shit down you are lucky electricty is fucking deadly!!!if you would have got zapped like a motherfucker then the alum.would have been really hot so that tells you the current was weak!!!

Okay I had to look this up for you and transcribe it, because I knew I had seen a presentation of something like this at the International Conference in Miami in 2004. You may be able to look it up by name or Authors, or I can find answers from the text if anyone has specific questions.
The article is titled:
Utilization of Pulsed Power to Stimulate Fructification of Edible Mushrooms
The authors are listed as:
S. Ohga, N. S. Chu, Y. Li, and Daniel J. Royse

The abstract reads:

The effect of pulsed electricity on fruiting body formation of eight edible mushrooms, Grifloa, frondosa, Philiota nameko, Flammulina velutipes, Hypsizygus marmoreus, Pleurotus ostreatus, P. eryngii, P. abalones, and Agrocybe cylindracea was investigated. The application of a pulsed electric current of 150kV directly to the substrate just before fructification stimulated the formation of primordia of all eight species. The treatment was especially effective for pleurotus.

okay, for those curious, here's from the text;

Pulsed power treatment

Pulsed power treatments were carried out just before the fruiting stages. Pulsed power of 100-170 kV (1.0 kWS) was shot directly through the electrodes from the instrument (YH1G-200K-1KJC, Yamabishi Electric Co.) to the mature sawdust based substrates

Effect of pulsed power on fruiting body formation

...Pulsed power resulted in a higher production of fruiting bodies in all strains. ...The fruiting capacity was actually increased by the pulsed power. Though a decrease of fruiting body production in the third flush is the usual pattern on the sawdust-based substrate of L. edodes, the pulsed power treatment improved the yield.

(it goes on to say)

The reason for the stimulating effect of pulsed power for fructification is not understood in detail.

So, you'll have to extrapolate the data and consider your own unique situation. You current probably wasn't pulsed (But I really don't know at all - electricians??) and your substrate may or may not be sawdust-based. BUT from the data, you may infer positively that you could be increasing the yields. Sometimes expectations lead the way to reality - think positive! Hope this helps. Food for thought anyway.
Light and Love,
Jeremy Davis

That was (highly overused word that truly applies here) AWESOME Jeremy. I will keep you all informed, and if it actually miraculously stimulates growth (which was alien sub tek spawned to poo and cased with 50/50 peat/verm), I may just crack the next one on purpose! Will update when the time comes. Thanks so much to all for your insight and assistance. Jeremy, I also think if you are interested that you just earned yourself a print.

Definitely keep us informed! The more accurate real life data we collect the more the community can move ahead together. I think you'll be nicely surprised. Anyway out of curiousity, how far along is your substrate? Would you call it shortly before pinning or is it not so far developed, that may make the difference. I love the part about breaking the unit on purpose! I was almost on eBay looking for a Yamabishi! Anyway, do you have any gourmet or medicinal prints or cultures? PM me if so! Thanks for the offer!

Jeremy Davis

I will have some Golden Oyster culture soon...will be glad to ship that to you when the time comes.

The sub was spawned to Horse poo and was fully colonized and cased in the first 24 hours of the fruiting process.
