Thin Casing layer Q's

If a casing layer was made extremly thin, what are the negative effects of this? And can additional casing be added after the 1st flush? Thanks :thumbup:

Yes additional casing can be added after the first flush, and even now too. I'm not sure what the negative effects would be other than you're not providing your substrate with extra moisture to utilize while fruiting. Cobweb and other contams might be more likely to attack as they're closer to the surface of the mycelium but I'm not sure how much more of a possibility this is.

A thicker casing layer will support bigger shrooms, yes, you can add casing after.

Being closer to the mycelium makes cobweb LESS likly to attack, if anything, since mycelium fends off contaminates.

A thin layer isnt really a problem...to thin and you can remove alot of water ability to the shrooms...but if used correctly 1/4" can do well, and you just add a bit after each flush..

A thin casing layer is much less a problem than a thick one that wasn't colonized well, which can result in the dreaded green. For a thin casing, incubation for the casing run is probably not even a good idea since thin casings often overlay quickly (which basically means you won't have any casing at all). Also, a thin casing layer, in my experience, means the substrate will dry out more between flushes because that is where more of the water will draw, the substrate itself. Substrate, as opposed to casing material, is harder to rehydrate once it's dried out, but it can be done if you are willing to dunk it between flushes.

If you add more, add VERY little. I wouldn't add more than a dusting because if the mycelium has switched to the fruiting mode, it won't go through more and uncolonized casing material, especially peat-based, is an invite for contamination.
