Taliban, Nuclear?
    #437903 - 10/26/01 05:27 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

"Two scientists who helped Pakistan become a nuclear power are questioned over alleged links to the Taleban" from the BBC.

Anyone worried? I mean if the other shoe is just anthrax, I'm not really that worried. If the other shoe is something more like the above... well I'll be a little more worried. Just thought I'd throw that up there and let y'all chew on it.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's Dawn newspaper said on Saturday that in an interview from inside Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden said he had nuclear and chemical weapons and might use them to respond to U.S. attacks.

"I wish to declare that if America used chemical or nuclear weapons against us, then we may retort with chemical and nuclear weapons. We have the weapons as deterrent," the newspaper quoted bin Laden as telling a well-known Pakistani journalist in Afghanistan on Wednesday night.

The paper said that when asked where he got the weapons from, bin Laden replied: "Go to the next question."

Dawn said Hamid Mir, editor of Pakistan's Ausaf newspaper, had interviewed bin Laden, prime suspect in the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, after being taken blindfolded by jeep from Kabul on November 7.

The paper, which printed a photograph showing Mir with bin Laden, said it was the first interview the Saudi-born militant had granted to any journalist since the deadly September 11 attacks.

I think that if they had nukes that they would of nuked us on 09-11-2001. I believe that they are getting stressed out due to all of the bombings over there.

Bin Laden was interviewed, and he claims to have nukes and chemical weapons. He says he'll use them as retalliation if the US uses nukes or chemical weapons.

Well, according to a BBC report, Bin Laden said no such thing in the original language interview, the quote only exists in the English translation..

It is not only possible, but probable. The former Soviet government, which of course has the second largest stockpile of weapons grade nuclear material in the world (behind the United States) was and still is in a very poor position to protect any of it. There are credible reports of TONS of nuclear grade material sitting in sheds locked only with a masterlock padlock, of nuclear submarines sitting in dock with only an underpaid civilian watching them from half a mile away in a snowed-in tower. Not only that, but former Soviet military personel were at one point starving because they were not being paid. There are numerous reports of high ranking military smuggling weapons materials out of the country. We only hear about those that were caught, not the ones that were successful. Black market estimates on the price to buy materials for 'the bomb' at as little as $40,000 US dollars. Osama Bin Laden would have the connections to get in on such a bargain basement price if he had the /will/ to do so. Now, it's anyone's guess as to if he had or has the /will/ to start a nuclear holocaust. Personally, I think he is trying to drag the US into a position where it begins lashing out against 'evil' with such disregard for the rights of other countries and other peoples, that it turns the world against itself. Failing that, I could see him utilizing the 'bomb'. It isn't such a great feat of imagination.

Ish

For someone who crashes planes full of civilians into huge fucking towers filled with citizens it seems a bit absurd that he would say he will only use nukes of chemical warefare if the US uses those kinda weapons against afganistan. Its obvious that bin laden is a fucking wacky and i think if he had the nukes he woulda busted them out 9-11 if he was able to get them into the country. Since there was and hasnt been a an attack from such a weapon i would assume that he was unable to get any bombs into the US and trying to get a bomb into the US now would be so much more difficult than it woulda been post 9-11. The only way i can see him using that kinda weapon now is if he launched some kinda cruise missle at the US, but something tells me the missle wouldnt make it very far and the resulting attack from the US would prolly be pretty ruthless.

This is all true> I recently went to a frightening lecture in which a former assistant secretary of defense was talking about both nuclear and chemical weapons, and said that the number of nuclear weapons remaining in Russia is over 6,000, and that the number of warheads that disappeared when the Soviet Union crumbled is over 1,000.
I don't choose to be worried though, living in fear is no life to live.

Ishmael, I saw your handle and avatar and have to ask if this is a reference to the book Ishmael?

From the BBC: "In an Urdu-language version of the article translated by the BBC, he makes no such claim, but the Pakistani journalist who interviewed Bin Laden confirmed that the militant did make the statement."

Site: here

While I tend to think he doesn't have such weapons, the claims were made and should be food for thought.

Yes, yes, yes... I know I keep harping on this issue. More news from the BBC:
"The Times newspaper reported on Thursday that a Kabul house abandoned by members of Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network contained evidence of plans for nuclear weapons.

The newspaper reported that the partially-burnt plans contained bomb-making instructions, as well as studies of chemical and nuclear devices."

Well, Bin Laden is trying to look like a good guy here. He probably didn't expect so many people to die. He attacked the towers to damage the economy, not kill as many Americans as possible, just sort of a bonus. If he began to nuke America, he would lose all his support. He's not the homicidal maniac everyone thinks he is, he's probably far smarter then any politician's in America.

Good SHow Mr Kurtz....we also should note something that my cat was raving about yesterday...."this has been going down sice time out of mind forwards and backwards and in all directions, it is human behavior, there are no enemies, consume the fruits of your labour and get to the next step..." ...then he promptly hacked a furball. I cried.

Anyway the US pays the price for "Dollar-imperialism", means for forcing other, independent countries into slavery through depts, embargos and shit like that. and slaves will allways free themself and the holders of slaves will allways fall, that's natural and sept.11 showed me once again, i don't like what happened but it was obvious to me that it would happen some day.
