Who is going to the G8 demos in Gleneagles?
    #4365666 - 07/03/05 06:24 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Nice informative (leftwing biased) film about the G8
http://camcorderguerillas.net/g8_view.htm

Adbusters campaign
http://adbusters.org/blogs/content/view/60/53/

I'm gonna try to make it there, which will probably mean taking a flight which most of the demonstraters are against. But flying is one of the most efficient means of propulsion. If every passenger drove by car it would be much worse.
And the flight trails in the sky work against global warming by reflecting sunlight back into space.

That video didn't really say much. If the schkeapers in das vidoo could speak das engloosh a wuttul but butter, it would be a better production. but having whiny bitches whine and bitch don't really set your platform down.

Hey man, are subtitles not enough to you? You want the whole world to speak exactly the same way you do? Do you know their languages as well as they do yours? Having trouble with diversity?

Going to Gleneagles, are you?

You might want to read this report first --

Yes I was at Gleneagles and it was amazing. So many people, so many different reasons to be there. And most of the protest like every protest against the G8 was completely peaceful.
But in the end like always the anarchists grouped at the fence and started making trouble. And the media almost only reports on the violence. Never on the 95% of the people who come there to protest peacefully.
About the plane ride. Planes are about as polluting as cars, more polluting than buses and trains. But I didn't fly just because of the G8, I am gonno combine this into a Britain trip.

I'll post some pictures of the marches when I come back. Then you can see that is was mostly peaceful. Only the people dressed completely i black and wearing face masks are there for the trouble. Stupid, naive, fucked up anarchists who ruin it for everyone.

There is no money in reporting peace... everybody enjoys watching some good old-fasioned violence though...  :frown:

I always though the case was that aviation is the world's fastest growing man-made source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - seen by many as a major contributor to global warming. Some 16,000 commercial aircraft pump out 600 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

A study by the eco-group Friends of the Earth found that one return London-Miami flight generates as much carbon dioxide as the average British motorist produces in a year.

Experts say flying is more damaging than driving, because carbon dioxide, water vapour, and nitrogen oxide spewed high in the air enter the ozone layer straightaway. When emitted at ground level most of the last two elements evaporates.

A study by " Friends of the Earth" doesn't seem like an unbiased study to me.

Who are these experts you talk about? Source please.

Look mate, you're wrong.  Just accept it and learn a new truth.  No need to get your knickers in a twist over it.

I gave you one source - Friends Of The Earth.  Oh so they're biased eh?  What against?  The aviation industry but not against automobiles!?!  Seriously, think about that one....  Especially as FotE generally get in INDEPENDENT experts for studies.  These people base their opinions on scientific FACT, not conjecture.

More sources?  Ok.  All the following quotes are from The Carbon Trust or Friends of the Earth and have benn ratified by the UK GOVERNMENT.

In total, the world's 16,000 commercial jet aircraft generate more than 600 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, the world's major greenhouse gas, per year.

Or what about this one: aviation generates nearly as much carbon dioxide as that from all human activities in Africa.

Here's one particularly relevant to you.....

A typical flight of under 500km, say from London to Amsterdam, will release 0.17 kg of carbon per passenger per kilometre compared with 0.14 kg/km by car, 0.052 kg/km for rail and 0.047 kg/km by ferry.

What makes the growth in air travel so concerning for ecologists is not just the nature of the emissions from aircraft that include carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, but the high altitude at which these gasses are being spewed into the atmosphere. At these heights, these chemicals have twice the effect on global warming than they have near ground.

The National Resources Defence Council say;

How significant is pollution from airports compared to cars?

One 747 arriving and departing from JFK airport in New York City produces as much smog as a car driven over 5,600 miles, and as much polluting nitrogen oxides as a car driven nearly 26,500 miles. While the government has effectively required cars to undergo emissions inspections (with resulting improvements in emissions and efficiency), airplanes have not received the same scrutiny. Meanwhile, air travel is increasing in popularity twice as fast as car travel and is projected to double within the next 20 years.

I'll find a lot more if you want.  Now wheres the expert that says:

Quote:

About the plane ride. Planes are about as polluting as cars, more polluting than buses and trains

Quote:

But flying is one of the most efficient means of propulsion. If every passenger drove by car it would be much worse.

Oh and where the hell is there any "expert" saying this!

Quote:

the flight trails in the sky work against global warming by reflecting sunlight back into space.

That last ones just madness mate!

OK, I underestimated the damage of flying.
But, the thing about the contrails is true. It's a global effect which is called global dimming. Aerosols and contrails make the world dimmer, that means less sunlight reaching and warming the surface. This effect has largely balanced with global warming. But as the air gets cleaner and cleaner, global dimming will reduce and global warming will kick into full gear.
A good strategy against global warming might be to release unreative and enviroment friendly aerosols into the air.
