Horse crap is more favored because it hasnt been digested by 4 stomachs and still contains alot of digested straw. Cow shit can work too..its often better to throw in some straw and coir though. Both should be field collected and weathered properly.

Yes composted crap, like from the store, is generally pretty crappy.

You should search posts by Chinacat, the quote is from him. The thumbprint thread is great, and alot of his others

Look in the paper for ads where farmers are literally giving away their horse poo, or actually pull right in to one of the local farms if you have any and ask to have or buy some. They can't get rid of it as fast as they need to...I just paid one of the locals 5 bucks for a pickup truck load of the finest, aged black gold.

Then follow the teks for pasteurization (leaching as well if you don't get the manure in it's mature form) and you are good to go. Horse poo contains more nutrients necessary to our hobby. In the words of Nike, just do it.

Whats the story with racehorse poo? I remember somebody commenting on them being fed better, or fed supplements, can't remember if they said it was better or not.

People in cities can generally get horse poo easier than cows as most cities have horse stables or riding schools close by. The riding school near me has a huge pile. There are a few cows around my area too.

Store bought crap is crap
