Need some help with mushroom id. Southern U.S.
    #4375961 - 07/06/05 02:06 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hey you's guys. A friend and I went hunting last night and found quite a few mushrooms. They were growing out of cow dung. The stalks are hollow and about 2-4 inches tall. The gills are dark grey. The spore print is black. The stalks are white. The caps are white with a tad bit of brown toward the center. The stalks bruise brownish/tanish. The caps have a bit of a crackle pattern to them espesically the more mature ones. I live in Northern Arkansas if that helps. Are they active? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!! I'm posting 2 pics to help with id.

I find a good bit of those when cube hunting. I think it's either Panaeolus antillarum or Panaeolus campanulatus. That's my opinion; wait for someone who has more knowledge to give you a better ID. What I can tell you for sure, however, is that they are not active.

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

Alright cool. Yeah...we searched two other cow fields and didn't find a damn thing. But i found a shitload of these guys in one field. At least I know which field the shrooms are growing in now. Thanks.

Do not eat, non active, and very prevelant when cubies are out. Like cubies though, they have a very distinctive smell that is very earthy like aminitas, the difference in smell should tell you to drop the sucker where you picked it. they usually protrude from the center of a dung pile as opposed to growing from the side of a patty like a cubie. I heard a tale a devestating sickness when ingested in mass amount(DUH!).

O yeah! When I first found them, I didn't know there was anything that closely resembled copes (macroscopically). There they are.
I know one field, that you look across and see a sea of them.

peace
