Dangerous idea or perfect ideal?
    #4377175 - 07/06/05 06:49 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

"Homo sapiens, the first truly free species, is about to decommission natural selection, the force that made us.... Soon we must look deep within ourselves and decide what we wish to become."

In regards to medical and biological sciences escalating very very quickly. In 50 years nature might not be very important to our every day lives.

Can humanity say goodbye to nature due to our science? Or will we be in over our heads?

Any reason why? Who says specifically that nature is the best guide for human beings? Nature developed the species through a process that best allowed the species to SURVIVE in a harsh environment. We have a lot of control (for the most part) over our environment. Who says we can't figure out a better way?

I believe we should follow Nature's path out of compassion.

Why? It's not like "Nature" CHOSE to give us life (as far as we know). I'm not saying that we will destroy nature, what I'm saying is that we will assume the decision making responsibility for the future of our species. Ala, Gene manipulation, paradise engineering (ala better pharmaceuticals), nano-medicine, anti-aging, etc. Stuff like that. I don't mean go out and kill penguins.

I find beauty and inspiration in life from Nature. Especially nature that humans haven't directly altered.

I don't really have an argument for you, but this is just the way I feel at this moment.

we already have abandoned natural selection.

I know I wouldn't be alive otherwise.

while I am selfishly grateful for this, I shudder to think what the long term effects on the human genome will be.

the effect so far is that we become the doctor and the patient - we merge into consciousness as a human right from our basic tool using animal origins.

reducing suffering and sparing lives makes tremendous sense, who is to say what a long term "impact" will be; we are in the forge now.

All science, medical and technological advances is from nature as far as I am concerned. Our medical and technological advances is just our way of manipulating the environment to our advantage. Man is 100% natural, man creates shit, that shit is also natural why...because man is natural. Automobiles rusting in a forest is natural because it is from Man. Peyote makes mescaline. We make mescaline sulfate. Man is natural so really can anything be unnatural if so what? No pulling metaphysical shit on me. Man will never do away with nature it is impossible.

> In 50 years nature might not be very important to our every day lives

In 50 years, our lives might not be very important to nature. It is a very interesting time... we are at the point that we can destroy ourselves with our own technology. Right now this requires the resources of a nation to perform, but soon (if not already), it will be possible for a single individual to create that which can kill all. Will our techonology and ethics stay ahead of the curve and keep us alive, or are we destined to failure at the hands of our own technology?

> Man will never do away with nature it is impossible.

However, nature may very will do away with man. If mankind continues to evolve (assuming that evolution is true), it would appear that machines will become the next step in our evolutionary path.

Our physical evolution is slowing down.

Our mental and emotional evolution is about to speed up.

Science fiction usually seems to become science reality.

The ideas of technology come from the earth. Every living being is connected to the earth, it's where we came from. Therefore, creativity in all its forms comes from the Earth.

This is why I believe the internet is the pinnacle of human evolution. The Earth already knows its crucial to reaching a new point of development in humans. In the mental/emotional way as
niteowl said.

I believe the earth already has a pre-determined cap on how far our technology will go before the 'reset' button is pushed.

With reference to this question you might find Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" an interesting read.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. We are on the verge of evolving so far past the physical limitations that nature forces on us that we can just run from it and never look back.

Call me stubborn, but I want natural selection back.

But to be fair, the individuals who make me want that probably won't
contribute much to mental and emotional evolution.

They may well be one and the same.

"Call me stubborn, but I want natural selection back."

Then you would not be surfing the Internet, but in the woods protecting your ass.

Natural selection went out the window, YEARS ago, when we came together as a society, and started setting down rules for procreation.
