psychedelics tachycardia?
    #4376667 - 07/06/05 06:55 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I was wondering if anyone had any scientific evidence of psychedelics (mescaline in particular) can cause tachycardia(abnormal and rapid heart rate). I did a search on mecaline side effects and this came up as one of them. I also found that other "drug side effect web pages" said that LSD and mushrooms can cause this. This worrys me because I seem to get real paranoid about my heart on drugs. Dont know why its just the way my mind works.

By the way I cant find a list of side effects to mescaline in general, could someone point me into the right direction?

At some points of your trip your heart might be a little faster than normal, but nothing substantial would really happen.

As long as you don't have a weak heart, or any heart problems, I wouldn't be concerned about it at all.

Take a look at Erowid for more information on mescaline and other drugs.

In a VERY broad sense, psychedelics will cause some "generalized" sympathomimetic effects (e.g. fight or flight response).

This may include tachycardia, although the effect is probably quite mild and could very well be the direct result of the "excitement" of tripping rather than the direct effects of the drug. Also keep in mind that different classes of hallucinogens will likely produce different effects. For instance the more "amphetamine like" a hallucinogen is, the more likely it is to produce tachycardia.

With that being said however the chance of tachycardia is low. As far as formal studies are concerned a pubmed search of "mescaline" combined with "Tachycardia" only reveals two hits one of which was performed in dogs.

Actually both Phenyls and tryps have an amphetimine like quality. I cant sleep on mescaline, lsd or mushrooms. They all have a speedy feeling, or "energy bursts" if you will. If you are reffering to "disasociatives" I wouldnt know. I dont have much experience with them. And wouldnt consider them psychedelics anyway. As for erowid, there was no info on side effects, Im actually quite familiar with them and for some reason they lack info on cacti and its alkaloids.

The reason they 'lack' information on side effects is because that information doesn't exist. No physical side effects have been found as of yet, to my knowledge.

A bad experience could cause certain disorders, the same as if someone were to have a traumatic experience in a war.

You'll more than likely have a lot more tachycardia while masturbating than on psychedelics.

DMT does increase heartrate. I haven't seen evidence of other psychadelics causing tachycardia however.

I was incomplete in my reply...

mushrooms, cacti and ayahuasca does increase heart rate, but it is mild and transient.
DMT alone(smoked, injected) should be more drastic, but also shorter.

so, by knowing your heart conditions are okay, just relax.
