Oat Substrate
    #4376081 - 07/06/05 04:44 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Ive been working on WBS for a little bit, and although they give pretty dense fruits (and potent compared to BR), their few and far between. Does anyone have experience working with oats as a substrate? How is the yeilds/density/potentcy? did you use crimped or whole oats? ive aquired crimped oats, figured it would allow the mycellum to colonize faster. is their any differences in the prep than of WBS? ive observed that they double in mass after reaching full absorbtion, but dont increase in mass during PCing like WBS does.

this is what nutrtiondata yeilded about the tryptophan content of oats, if trptophan means anything....

oats 234
buckwheat 192
rye 154
milo(sorghum) 124
millet 119
BR 100

anyways did a search on the topic and it seems no one uses oats, just seemed kinda odd considering this information.

Heres an old thread with a highly respected old member B.I.O. saying he used whole oats.

Oats get really sticky when wet, they do not use them for whiskey any more due to this. Your crimped oats will probably be very mushy, like exploded rye grains but even sitckier, and ALL will be exploded. Starchy exploded grains are said to give rise to more cottony myc growth rather than the desired rhizo growth.

The high tryptophan levels interest me too. I plan on getting barley which is also high in it.

my oats were not mushy at all, and they remained cleanly seperated (after PCing) in the jar in when shaken much like WBS does.

edit: barley is listed at 208, a little short of oats. im sure it wouldnt make a difference though. i would also reccommend buckwheat. although its a much higher price at $.84 a pound, it kept its form after simmering/PCing.
