Stalling jars of WBS...Doomed? - *Pics*
    #4375904 - 07/06/05 03:46 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I inoculated 2 Quart jars of WBS with LC about four weeks ago.  The spores were from a sponsor and grew fine in the culture.  Here are some details:

-Soaked for 32 hours and drained until there was no drops of water left.

-Brand of WBS is Morning Song- containing mostly White Millet.

-The jars have Tyvek with one 1/4 inch open hole in the lid.

-The Incubator (TIT) was kept at constant 83 degrees the entire time in complete darkness.

-There was a slight amount of humidity when opening the lid at times, but not too much for concern.  I have had no issues with growing several jars of LC, a couple of cakes, and some Rye Jars in this TIT at the same time.

The growth took off after about three days.  At about day 5 or 6, I shook the jars ONCE.  It looked to be about 25-30% colonized.  They have not been shook since.  The growth started off again, but stalled after a few days.  I have not seen any growth in about two weeks.

Any ideas what has made it stalled, and what can get it going again?
Or should I chunk them?

I had some other jars that did the same thing a couple months ago.  But I thought I filled them up too much.  These are not near as full.  Is it possible that this LC was just not strong enough to make it to 100%?  Or can I rule out the possiblity of bad spores since there is growth?

Here is also a pic of some Rye that is in the same TIT going just fine.  Day 12

Interesting. I don't see any reason for them to stall. They can breathe, right?
I am inclined to think the bird seed dried out, but by the pics they don't look dry.
Try turning them upside down, see if that helps.

peace. GL

Yea, they can breath just fine.

I only used the tyvek, then lid with two holes (one is inoculation that has bandaid over) and then two coffee filters on top of that. I would think the one 1/4 inch hole would be enough.

Another observation is how the top is more colonized than the bottom.

They should have good gas exchange but like LouiseLouise said try flipping the jars to allow co2 build up to escape. I had the same problem and flipped them and they finished nicely.

Don't need to worry about the tyvek getting all contaminated?

I'm overly conscience about the contents not touching the tyvek when I shake etc.

Guess it's worth a shot

If they didnt contam & have only colonized as your pic's show.... they are dried out. No doubt.

you can flip them, but why? That will not increase moisture.

What you can do -is- make up some new jars, the G2G the colonized grains to fresh jars.

Just a thought.

Good suggestion.

I think I'll play around a little and do both.  I'll flip one jar and maybe squeeze a little sterile water in there, and I'll whore out the other jar to a new one with fresh grains and see if I can get that going again.

Thanks to all that helped me out.

One heaping tablespoon of colonized grains to a fresh quart - will allow you to whore it out - into multiple jars.

I get 15 / 18 new quarts - from one colonized quart.

Future reference though, only shake your jars after innoculating to spread spores(if syringed). Other than that shaking after growth developes will disturb the myc's foundation, rendering it weak and confused, possibly even suicidal.

This is the only time I shake after inoculation. It's after growth starts, however it disperses the grain and heals itself and takes off fast. Unless... it has stalled big time.

There are some deep debates around here regarding this. I been using WBS lately, and I had some healthy myc growing. Then I shook the jar according to WBS tek, then it all stopped. Anyways, at least syringe some sterilized water and see if that jumpstarts it. How you Casing? I just did verm/peat like everyone else. Keep ur grow posted.
