No humidity gauge. Rule of thumb?
    #4375667 - 07/06/05 02:26 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I do not have, nor do I plan on buying one for this grow. I have a basic rubbermaid/perlite terranium.

I was wondering how you can tell by touch if you are at least close to the right humidity.

If I run my finger across a wall of it an inch and a half, should my finger be dry, moist, wet, or dripping?

It was dripping wet when I only had two cakes in. Now that there is all 12 it is only moist. I attribute this to the lessened surface area of the perlite.

I just want to make sure I'm in the right ballpark for these things to take off.

Yes, it should be one of those.

Since condensation is a product of temperature differences between the outside of the chamber and the inside of the chamber, and has very little to do with the rh of the air, the rule of thumb...is to get a hygrometer. My chamber only has wet walls right after I mist them...other then that they are bone dry, and humidity is fine.

If you have any condensation on the sides of the walls your humidity should be high enough. Humidity isnt really a very important factor in growing. The way you tell if your humidity drops to low though is if everything is drying out. If they cakes start to dry, or shrink, or dont produce rhizos, or caps on mushrooms crack and split, then you know the rh is to low and you need more humidity..if nothing is drying out...then you have plenty of humidity.

I'm just noticed earlier that temp. definately has an effect on the condensation level. I guess I'm not to worried about it, then. Thanks for the tip.

Scatman is right about condensation (no indicator) As long as you have perlite down, you should be fine within range, IMO.

I agree with what has been said. If you want real accuracy, you can buy a Calibre III hydrometer for $20 on Ebay.

I have measured humidity in all sorts of situations with my Caliber III. I have found that any closed container that has a moist substance on the floor like perlite will quickly reach 100% RH. In fact getting it around 100% is easy and that's a great RH for cakes or any bare substrate.

If you ever do go with casings, keep in mind that 100% RH is a little too much for casings. To get a lower humidity is a little more complex and a different thread.

If the sides are dripping, it's OK. Moist perlite, closed terrarium, you are good.
