A. pantherina?
    #4374861 - 07/06/05 08:09 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I found these today in a park beneath deciduous trees of some sort. The small one is yesterday's, and the other two show it today. Somebody had already kicked it over, so I was glad I got to it. Bastard kids.

People often say that the pantherina is difficult to id. What else could this mushroom be easily confused with?
I also found these growing in a circle, perhaps the size of a garbage can lid. I have not seriously tried to id them. They were only about 5mm in diameter.

Thanks,
Wallace

You didn't provide a proper description(see the rules). Just by the looks of it, I would say you have Amanita rubescens. But this is just a guess, it is impossible to make a definitive statement without a proper description.

There are well over a hundred brownish capped Amanita species with which A. pantherina could be confused. Lots of those species have not yet been described in print.

Happy mushrooming!

My fourth photo seems to be Cyathus stercoreus.

About the amanita, I read a description of rubescens, and that seems to fit. Bruising slightly red, with indistinct volva, though I know that far from does it. Just guessing backwards from your suggestions.

I found a colony of pins like these yesterday

and I hope to go back and figure them out further.
In my Japanese guide I also find A. ibotengutake which has recently been subsumed under pantherina. It is larger, the annulus drops easily, and the volva forms several layers. That may be what my pins turn into.
