Evolution and Society

Many here have expressed their belief that society hampers natural selection by helping the weak. I contend that this ignores the fact that society itself is an evolutionary mechanism. Those who participate in society will have a greater chance of survival than those who fend for themselves. This may mean that more unintelligent, unhealthy, unmotivated people will survive and breed than would occur without society, but they have a role to play in society by doing tasks and transactions which increase the odds of survival for those who are intelligent, healthy, and motivated. Everyone benefits. Natural selection only weeds out those traits which hamper one's chance of survival, so if these traits which we may consider undesirable do not harm one's chance of survival, then they will persist. This is not working against natural selection. One can not work against natural selection any more than one can exist outside of nature.

Well, yep, I'd have to agree.

It seems like a lot of people don't quite get the idea behind evolution though;

There's nothing to hamper with natural selection. Evolution isn't going in one set direction, it is simply a state of constant change, being sometimes gently, and sometimes violently formed into shape by all the factors around it.

Like the shape of a landscape, completely different all over, shaped by the environment, but the shape isn't going anywhere or trying to do anything. It is simply a shape.

Very true. Societal structure provide a very valuable survival mechanism for humans, and thus is also an engine for evolution. I imagine that our distant descendants (that is, if we don't destroy ourselves beforehand) will have very different and greater mental and intellectual capacities and the like....
