Just curious what do you use and why?

I am trying to use peat now.. over coir. I haven't had much success yet, but I'll figure it out eventually, with some help of course.
Edit: because I just want to use a "real" non nutritious casing layer as I feel it will help me more in the long run.

I prefer PH adjusted peat based casings because my luck with coir has been very limited. Coir based casings always tend to colonize unnaturally fast and send my timing way out of sync. Also, straight verm works very well despite what people will say about it. I'd take straight verm over a coir based casing any day.

Actually, I use verm. based casings, lol. I voted for what I add to the verm.
Coir. Which I use for ease and the fact I started casings when I was a newb and haven't moved on to a peat, verm. and coir yet.

Sorry for not adding that choice it's just that I've yet to see a prolific straight verm flush.

My casing is 60% verm, 40% coir with oyster shell. Verm. based
My next will be 45% verm, 45% peat, 10% coir. Still kinda verm. based.
That's all I was pointing out. A lot of casings are actually verm. based, lol.

IMO, straight verm has does have one noticeable advantage over regular casing mixes, that being that harvesting does MUCH less damage to the casing layer, promoting primordia formation in the same spots for successive flushes. Just speaking from my experience, straight verm can really rock if used correctly.

i use a 50/50 verm and coir for the simple fact i havent moved to peat, but i get great results with this ratio and have never had a prob.with overlay and the moisture aspects of coir is great!!!!and i use no buffer and can get 4 to 5 flushes if i would like but to me anything over three is a waste of time!!!MPO and whats up hippie?

I was surprised to see most using what I use. I didn't like straight verm. Actually, I like jiffy mix. It's so easy to get and it's cheap. This time around, I used it straight OI has the surface absolutely covered with pins right now. Actually I forgot to add calcium carbonate so I consider myself lucky on that. I'll get some pics up.

Just keeping busy, lol. I use the 60/40 and am quite happy also. I have tried a 70/30 coir verm and it did overlay a bit. That was my point, I wouldn't recommend a coir "based" layer. More coir than verm can lead to overlay. At least that's what I've seen in my limited experiences with it.

Man, I was all confident in my casing 'till this thread, now I'm worried. I hope they turn out ok (go to full term) I added jiffy mix straight as a filler in a container, and it's flushing good right now. I'll take pics and keep a log on this so others can see if there is a difference.

A peat casing should always have verm too I've also noticed when using coir/verm the ratio should be in verms favor example; 40/60, 30/70 coir/verm. Has anyone else tried this? Gnostic I hear what your sayin

Straight Jiffy mix (peat, verm and perlite):

What'dya think? I like it. O, that's cow cased with Jiffy. For the n00bs, see the white dots? That's primordia, it will be pins very soon (matter of hours)
