Easy to grow gourmet truffles?
    #4373479 - 07/05/05 09:56 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everyone,

I'm running some petri dishes with Psilocybe Mexicana truffles at the moment but I like cooking as well, so I started wondering if there are any easier to grow gourmet truffles.

I'm aware that a lot of the more expensive ones are symbiotic so I'm not particularly interested in trying them at the moment. They're far too expensive to mess up on as well.

But are there any cheaper, easier ones I could have a try with? That I could grow in RGS or similar?

Since I'm cloning the Mexicana from a solid truffle I have all the gear like dishes, agar etc.

Thanks!
John

Hey,

Not easy, but doable, morels form sclerotia on grass seed.

An oyster mushroom, Pleurotus tuberrigium, forms a giant sclerotia.

Polyporous umbilatus forms sclerotia, its a mushroom closely related to Hen of the Woods, Grifola frondosa.

I don't know if anyone is eating any of these sclerotia, the morel sclerotia though if they taste like the morel mushroom would be worth the effort.

I have never heard of anyone using morel sclerotia as truffles. You'd have to use sclerotia of the yellow morel, though.

It's an interesting idea though. I'd be willing to try it.

only know symbiotic truffles? are there any non-symbiotic??? my advice is to buy some inoculated tree seedlings, follow the vendor advices (some also do soil analysis) and hopefully after some years (it depends on the tree species) you can dig your golden prize.

i've read in - http://members.aol.com/DrAKhanaqa/frame_e.htm - that they produce and multiply truffle spores in vitro. Does anyone know anything about this process/tek?

I'm going to try it this fall, hopefully. I'm going to make some spawn for
planting outside early in the fall.

Why only yellow morels?

Thanks for all the replies!

There's an incredibly limited amount of information about this out there, this is about the only place I feel like I'd ever have any success asking something like this.

Does anyone know if the edible symbiotic truffles continue to grow even on dying or recently dead trees? I've seen some sclerotia forming molds that attack plants and kill them at a root level and was just curious to know if the edible forms would do this as well given the chance.

I know there's a specific name for life that causes decay in waste material but I can't remember it now. Could anyone give a clue?

Thanks again,
John

Nope, not truffles. "symbiotic", like you said.

If you could just grow truffles like that, dont you think someone wouldve done it by now? the profit there is too much to be ignored.
