Help. PC wont boot.
    #4372777 - 07/05/05 06:12 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

And by that, i mean it wont even turn on.  Last night it was working fine.  I did a proper shut down.
I go to turn it on this morning, and nada.  I'm thinking its the PSU.  The PC is around 5 yrs old.  The power unit came with the case, which was a cheapy i guess.

The only thing i did recently was add a 120GB HD.  It worked fine for about 2 weeks with this drive in, so im not sure if that could be the problem.

Is the PSU still usable if i disconnect some drives?  Could it be something other than the power unit?

Lucky i got this 166 hooked up.

It's most likely the PSU, yeah, and if it has failed there is nothing you can do to fix it short of opening it up (not something I recommend, unless you have electronics experience).

You can test out the power supply by jumping the GREEN wire in the ATX connector to one of the BLACK ground wires (make sure you unplug ALL other power connectors so you don't damage any of the components in the computer), like this:

If the power supply turns on when you do this, it is most likely fine and you should start looking for a new motherboard :smirk:

If it doesn't turn on, then the PSU is dead and will need to be replaced.

You can use a paper clip, or really anything conductive. You just need to make a connection between the green wire and black wire.

I think I used a piece of coat-hanger once. Make sure you sand the ends, to get any paint off for a good connection.

And the red wire wasn't anything special, just a small piece of wire with stripped ends

lol, ok cool dude.  So before i kill myself, lemme just run it thru with you.

Im gonna use a twist tie from the grocery store.
The PSU is gonna stay in the case, and its going to be plugged into the wall.  All the internal power connectors are gonna be unplugged.

Is that thin wire gonna be able to handle any current?  And uhm.. by 'on' im assuming you mean the fan will start right.

Thanks for all the help btw.

I'm not sure if a twist tie will work.

Hang on a few mins and let me try it out.

OK, a twist tie will work fine!

It's only about 1v.

Ok, i plugged the green into a black right next to it. Nothing happened. I guess the PSU is shot. =( Really weird since it turned off fine n everything. Maybe there was a power surge in the middle of the night or something.

Ack. Not too sure where to get used PSUs in T.O. i hope theyre not much, i was just about to sell this thing to my buddy soon.

Lots of PUSs are very cheaply made, and will fail after only a few years. Some get overly hot, too, and that always helps them fail sooner than they should.

At least you didn't get any fireworks

I was playing WoW when my last power supply literally blew out (it was a VERY cheap 450W PSU that came with a $30 case). I'm just about to finish a quest when my computer makes a loud bang and shoots sparks out the back :smirk:

  That must've scared the shit outa ya.

Yeah, i just took it out of the case and its an 'E-Data ATX-300'
Heh, i think it -was- the new HD that fucked the cheap lil thing up.

Hey you play WoW?  What server?  I'm a 40 NE Hunter on Eredar.  Game expired about a month ago, probably gonna buy a game card tommorow along with a used PSU.

Dont think i wanna invest too much cash since this PC will be goin to my buddy soon anyway. Im thinkin an older 350W will be ok.  My new PC will have something of quality tho.

I'd say it's a pretty good thing it was the PSU...

There are tons of computer places in Toronto, I never really did much shopping for computer stuff while I was living there, but there are stores pretty much anywhere you go. Lots of small computer stores have used parts... just look out for shady characters, some of the shops aren't so honest.
