Yup, these shrooms are soon to be going under the 'scope, as well as one or two sent to Guzman and a couple of other people for further identification analasys. Will keep you all posted on results from those observations.

Here is another pic which I think shows up the "bluefoot" thing that was mentioned earlier. Unfortunately the pic is a bit blurry but the bluing is quite clear (just lean back and cross your eyes a little ). These mushrooms were in pristine condition, so the bluing wasn't a result of bruising (although they did blue when bruised also).

I sent spores and stuff to Guzman, and he replied back to me that he'd never heard of this species! Ah well. I think I pointed him in the direction of that excellent write up on NZ psilocybes by Johnson&Buchanan (or someone like that)

The sample is very close to Psilocybe makarorae with only a small difference in cheliocystidia length.

Information from "The genus Psilocybe in New Zealand" by Johnston and Buchanan, 1995.

Thanks workman!! Thats rad.

Back when I first found these shrooms and later when I made this thread, I thought that they were Ps. makarorae. After more thinking and discussion I came to the suspicion that they were possibly not makarorae but one of the other native NZ species, possibly one of the as yet unnamed ones mentioned by Buchanan. This is due to habitat and macroscopic differences. I wonder if different cheliocystidia length is enough to support this suspicion?

For those interested here are some more pics of this species from this year:
