you want the casing layer to be moist.
your problem is probably air exchange...give them more fresh air!~

you dont want puddles of water on the casing layer, you can get it with a paper towel or cottonball.but like road said you do want it to be moist and lots of fresh air get a little personal fan battery operated a foaf runs a coolmist and fans them right on the casings two to three times a day,if the shrooms are thin it is more and likely to be air exchange or substrate by the sound of it, it isnt moisture!!!!!

Roadkill is on the money, you need more FAE. Transpiration is how these babies grow not just cell division. WBS is definitely not as good as rye but it can produce some whoppers (50+ gram fruits). WBS is slower at colonizing because of it's minute structure and harder surface (shell). GL

Ya I got priorities too!!!"

I thought millet was supposed to be excellent... there's a lot of millet in WBS...
Yes millet is excellent...as a substrate to use to spawn bulk substrates.
but not to fruit off of.
if you wanna fruit off grains...use Rye.

>For rye, just use rye grass seeds
No, use RYE.
20 quarts of millet, cased at 2 inches thickness, should easily get you 8-12 ounces dry, if everything is done right. However I think your doing something wrong since you say "This is looking weaker than whole grain brown rice" and whole grain brown rice is a kick ass substrate, almost as good as rye..millets pretty good too though...any and all should produce you around 14 grams per quart, could be even double that on a nice rye/wbs/verm casing, could be a little less too.

Thats not to horrible really...getting optimal results can take alot of work and alot of reading. This is half like following a recipe, and half like an art form. You need to follow everything exactly, which you might not be doing without even knowing..thats why lots and lots of reading is required, people will say things you never even thought would effect your results, and you'll pick up little tips everywhere. I'd suggest checking out my How I do Grain link if you havnt yet..some good tips for good grain fruiting. And along with following everything and doing everything just perfect, with the right amount of care, you have to treat it as an art form and feel for your mushies..after time growing this comes..you can see what your mushies are doing and trying to tell you, and after lots of reading, you know exactly how to fix it. Both of these things come with time.
How deep is the substrate? If over 2 inches, then IME, your wasting surface area and losing yeild. If under 1 3/4 inches, then IME, substrate is to thin to create a nice network. When you mixed the verm with the WBS, are you sure moisture was at field capacity? If not you could have dried out the grains further. I also am thinking the grains are just to dry to begin with. Water content of the substrate is VERY important, and the rez effect (adding the verm) can help that out, but isnt a fixit if water content was to off to begin with, just additional water on top of the already good water content of the grains.
You are probably getting around the same yeilds as me for my first few casings, per quart..

>I've heard that simmering grains can boost water content beyond what soaking can do, and I've also heard otherwise... what's your take on it?
Of course simmering grains WILL boost water content beyond that of soaking...I dont know who would have told you otherwise, but if they say simmering will not add more water...I wouldnt listen to anything that person says. Now some people dont LIKE simmering because they feel soaking adds enough water, and simmering adds to much. I seem to notice most of those people though are spawning to bulk...I started off fruiting from grain, and lots of it..I could NOT get a good flush off just soaked grain..colonization was usually shitty with rye on just soaking too...so I simmer. Well I found the best is to simmer rye for 30-40 minutes, simmer WBS for 10 minutes, add dry verm, all mixed together (again check out my grain link, I believe I cover my thoughts on simmering and just soaking there). When fruiting off grain I like 5-10% of kernals to be popped after PCing. I also REALLY like rye for fruiting and holding water. Thats why I REALLY like a mix of rye and WBS, lots of different kinds of nutes and varied water content between the different grains and the verm.
