S. divinorum flowers
    #436841 - 10/25/01 07:00 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

The salvia begins to have some buds. I?m not sure how long I?ll be able to keep the plants outdoor, since it begins to get colder and next week the first night frosts are supposed to come.

Thank you for the advice. Belive me, I would, if I had the space.
But I don?t so I?ll cut them back and put them in front of the window(inside), same as I did the last few years.

Great looking plants.

I notice that you've got a slight redenning on some of the newer leaves. This is something I've had happen a few times, and it appears to be due to a magnesium deficiency. Try watering the plants with a seaweed fetiliser, as I found this cures it.

Take care

Not in this case. This happens also if the temperature falls below 5?C(41?F) which happens here quite frequently the last few days.

Aaww, the pics of those flowers developing are amazing, congratulations! I would love my plants to flower, from what i've heard it's fairly unlikely that Salvia divinorums will though, is this the first time yours have bloomed? Do you have any idea whether there has been any critical situation which has triggered flowering?
Like, what was the light/dark cycle (what was the intensity of light)? Do you think the plants reached, or needed to reach, a critical size? Any idea of whether pot size, rootbase, rootbound factors like that mattered? What temperature were they at etc...? Thanks.

>Like, what was the light/dark cycle
The autum is coming, the days are getting shorter.

> (what was the intensity of light)?
The plants were outdoor with a few hours of firect sun a day.

Well, the plants were quite big for the pot size, so this could be one of the reasons.

>What temperature were they at etc...?
The daytime temperature at the last days was from 10-20?C at day and down to 0?C at night.

How tall and wide roughly were the plants and what is the pot width/height? The temperatures are quite low and the hours of daylight are decreasing (do you mind me asking where about in the world you are?), i have seen mention of triggering flowering (with artificial lights) by reducing the hours of light (i can't remember from what) and generally i think if plants are in pots that are too small for them they tend to be more likely to flower. Plus the stress of having slightly lower than ideal temperature (you mentioned that it was fast approaching the coldest temperatures you would consider leaving them outside in?), maybe all these factors contributed, you lucky, lucky bastard.
My plants are in pots that are from 1 1/4 feet to 1 3/4 feet wide so i don't know whether they would really ever be in pots that are too small for them. I would fucking love it if they flowered. I don't have the option of keeping mine outdoors. The tinging of the stem purple where the individual flowers themselves sprout from is really impressive. The photos are really good, promise you'll keep making a constant update on the progress?

The plants were 3 feet tall and the pot is 3 gallon.

> (do you mind me asking where about in the world you are?)

>(you mentioned that it was fast approaching the coldest

Nice!
Salvia divinorum flowers are gorgeous, when you are lucky enough to get'em.Good job! : )
I'm not sure, but I think some of the salvia species do flower because of shorter days and/or cooler weather. Not all salvia species do (for instance salvia greggii will bloom, spring through fall), but apparently S.divinorum does need this to make it flower.
Keep us updated on the flowers, Anno.
They are nice, thick, healthy looking plants you have there. I have yet to grow this species of salvia, but I'm gonna have to give it a try.

Spectacular!
So what is going on with it now? Did the flower die? Did the bud close up? Do you think it will make seeds? I was under the impression that these species did not produce seed and are propagated with cuttings, am I mistaken? If so, then where can I get some seeds?
What did it smell like?
Did you smoke it?
I think thats enough questions...mmm maybe 1 more. What (if any) fertilizer do you use?

The flowers dried and fell off befoore they opened.
I had to put the plant inside because of the frosts outside, and I think the change in humidity, temperature and available light was a bit too much for the flowers.
But the plant is doing ok.

I use an all alround fluid fertiliser on a regular basis. The plant shows you pretty soon if it needs ferilizers, since the leaves turn a pale color as it grows bigger without a fertilizer.

That's odd that the flowers died like that.
Did it frost on them at all, while they were outside? That looks like it could be just frost or freeze damage. If so,you may still get some flowers from the lateral shoots,if you keep them protected from the frost/cold.
