Possible Edible Mushrooms (Not Active)
    #4366895 - 07/03/05 05:08 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I have found some mushrooms in a neighbors yard. Theyre huge and have brown scars on the top of the mushroom. They are flat and wavy to bell shaped. I have 5 of them and I have nice pictures but this forum can only host 200 kb -_- any help? I think their green-spored leip. or either horse or meadow mushrooms. They have huge stalks with a veil on them. Im going to spore print them soon. Though wont help since my camera is so high quality that I cant post 'em please help.

Color of Cap: White with brown scars or called buff centers.

Stalk: White with a veil

Gills: Are white

These are from central california, August-September season probably.

Sounds like Chlorophyllum molybdites... green spored Lepotia. Could you get a print from it?

I REALLY SERIOUSLY HOPE YOU DID NOT EAT ANY OF THAT! I haven't been to this site in forever, but I do know plenty of things. I am botanist and well known scientist and I know a fair share about the identification of mushrooms. That looks a GREAT DEAL like the deadly toxic mushroom known as Amanita Citrina. If you eat it even a small amount of it, it will kill you in the most aweful way you could possibly die -- it destroys your liver in a very slow, and irreversible process. There is extremely limited possibility that mushrooms is a type of agaricus, of which some of its species are edible, but many many more are poisonous from the degree of making you sick to your stomach, to some that are near fatally toxic. It DOES NOT resemble ANYTHING even slightly edible. DON'T FUCKING EAT THAT! You've been well warned. If it has white spores, it WILL KILL YOU. I would even be reluctant to physically touch that mushroom. I really hope you're alive to read this.

Dont freak my gawd . Im not an idiot besides that I know my mushrooms and im sure its not what you think it is. I've already narrowed it down to 3 possible things and i've already posted that. I do appreciate you concern, which is a needed thing since idiots do live among us. The spore prints are taking their type to produce. Perhaps tommorow theyll be spored, if they do not spore all is good I would just keep them to feel like I accomplished something LoL.

Don't some species of lepiota have the same toxins as the death caps?
I picked some Lepiotas today, about 15 cm tall, because they do look pretty cool... but then threw them out.

it looks nothing like Amanita Citrina
it looks rather like a classic chlorophyllum molybdites
edible large lepiotas have much scalyier looking caps.
that said, it DOES resemble in many ways edible macrolepiotas.
off topic, but i also beleive nobody should ever have to call THEMSELF a "well known sceintist"
like if Jochen Gartz came on here, he wouldn't have to refer to himself as reputable. because he actually is.

WhichShroom - yes, there are several species of Lepiota that contain the same toxins as the deadly Amanita species, amatoxins. Those Lepiotas have caused several fatalities.

I agree with Mitchnast (and others) - those photos suggest a Lepiota to me more than an Amanita. Having said that, they are not clear enough to make anything like a definitive ID. Savako - do they bruise when cut in half vertically? How quickly? What color(s)?

Happy mushrooming!

Alright I just spored them and they didnt really spore as great as I thght they would. But they are vividly brown spore prints if not dark brown. Sorry I cant take a screenshot because the camera really wouldnt show much and id havta edit it to a 200 kb which wldnt tell you anything. The bruising on the stalk is greenish-brown with what looks like a taintish red in it but hardly noticeable they bruised rather quickly.
