question about corn as substrate
    #4367905 - 07/04/05 01:38 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Corn kernals.  Do I steam them w/ a small amount of water or put them into the jars with a small amount of water then PC them?

Also, does it make a difference what I use as a substrate to determine the potency or how fast the shrooms will grow?

I've done this before and had much success but would it behoove me to get messy and do the brf and verm deal?

I'm planning on doing a casing with these once they're fully colonized.

Input appreciated

Never done corn.. so I can't tell ya.

But yes.. 100% the substrate will determine the potency of the shrooms. It can also affect growth rates.

I would say No to the BRF and Verm. Best bet is to use WildBirdSeed(WBS) and then spawn it to horse poo. I'm in Florida as well.. and I finally found a nice place to collect horse poo for free. You should be able to find someone that will let you take it away for free.. to uh... help fertilize your garden .......

For the birdseed. Follow it exactly.

Then follow this (but don't use the straw... horse poo works great just by itself.)

There are other poo tek's.. search around.

Good luck

that's alright.  too much of a mess to do all that, plus I don't have enough "private" land to trust a patch of shrooms to my drunk ass neighbors.

BUT I FOUND IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!  My old post explaining it.

you can use popcorn with fairly good results. I've used it a few time not the most potent mushes ever but they did the trick. But your best bet is WBS it is also the cheapest 4Lb $0.99 and colonizes super fast.

WBS alone is not the best to fruit straight. Great as spawn, but Rye is actually a little better nutrient wise. Adding some rye with WBS will help out if Rye is too expensive to use as your mainstay.
