Someone I know is trying to figure out about how many PSI it takes to compress a compost product into a brick like coir comes as.
10 - 12 - 15 - 20 ton hydraulic press do the trick?
Any wizard out there that can refer me to an answer that is credible, I owe you one.
"Someone" doesn't want to buy the wrong press.

i guess it really all depends on the density of the coir or the compost he's trying to compress. Also, how much at a time, how big of a brick, and what kind of material in the compost?

Yah, lemun, id say you need the specifics before you could use a search to help you. Because, if he's trying to compress only a small amount (IE a lb) he wouldnt need a big of a press if he was trying to compress a large amount (IE 10 lbs). We require specifics!!!

Sorry man, I looked for a while, but couldn't find the answer for you. I emailed a company that compresses the coir so hopefully they get back to me with an answer. If so, I will let you know what they say.

Thanks for giving it a shot - guys.
The material is fine (as pictured), he wants to compress 22 to 25 lbs of it into a 12x3x13 inch brick.
Most coir appears to be made in India, Sri Lanka & such places the other side of the world. I do have an email in to a place in the Philippines that makes such bricks. No answer yet.

The more compressed, the more weight that will fit in a package .

Thanks, Bro.
I'm just looking for a PSI number. The press - he can afford. He just don't want to buy the wrong one. I sent you a PM.
EDIT:
He has X number of tons of the the substrate above to brick up. Anyone that comes up with the right PSI number (to get that done - with a hydraulic ram press), gets a FREE BOX & he will pay postage.

hehe yah, i tried searching for machines that dealt with bulk material, but, it kept coming up with light to heavy industrial tool presses. Hopefully my friend can find an answer for you.

Hint: Patents may give some answers..
Quote:
Briquettes may be extruded, stamped, or pressed, employing compaction pressures in excess of 1000 psi, and preferably in the range of 2000 to 10,000 psi
Quote:
Samples with density of 2,400 to 2,800 lb/cuyd yield values of compressive strength of 8,000 to 10,000 psi and Hardgrove Index of 60 to 80.
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parse...mp;f=S&l=50
The brick he wants has density of ~2200 to ~2500 lb/cuyd ... So maybe 8000psi is enough - don't know really..
