Is this possible?
    #436706 - 10/25/01 05:08 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

Is it possible to kill mycelium by shaking them too hard. I had 2 jars that had good growth that never came back after shaking and I cant see any contams in them. Thanks for your help :)

Shake the jar to speed up the growth of mycelia, spread around the spores and colonized substrate, that is why.

Not everyone uses BRF and verm jars(no shake, just wait). You shake jars of grain, grass seed, and other shakable subs. for the reasons pyro has already covered. As for your halted (visible) growth I'd say just wait it out, somtimes it takes the mycel a day or 3 to recover from shaking, thats why you shouldn't do it too much. The only other thing I can think of that might be causing this is bacterial contam, give it a whiff, if it smells funky, sour, or otherwise like ass, you have found your problem. Throw those jars out and drop a lysol bomb.

Last 2 posts are correct I am using rye jars. The jars have not recovered after about 1-1and 1/2 weeks where as the other jars were back after 3 days. There is a slightly funky odor but I am new and not sure whether or not this is just wet grain smell. I will throw them out to be safe. Also all jars were mildly funky before mycelium took over but all the other jars are 100%. Any body know about the original question. I am still learning and very curious.
Thanks yall!

Shaking doesn't harm the mycelium if everything is free of contams but shaking often spreads contams that might otherwise not be a problem. Shaking breaks the mycelial threads and makes them vunerable to attack by bacteria.
