Is this normal growth for 6 days with WBS ?
    #4366874 - 07/03/05 06:53 PM (12 years, 23 days ago)

Hey fellow shroomers,
Is this normal growth for 6 days with WBS:

Closeup:

I thought I had read that WBS colonizes much faster than BRF.
These jars of BRF were knocked up the same day and show much more progress:

...am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks !

The WBS jars were shook well right after inoculation, and then once more at 1st signs of mycelium.

This is my 1st try with WBS, so I'm kind of concerned.

shakein at 1st sign can make them shock a little takein longer
i believe the rule of thumb is shake once at 30 % colonization

I also found that skipping the simmering step, and just soaking for 12-18 hrs. speeds it up a little quicker. I found that simmering release starchs that slows down colonization

simmering may not be necessary, but if you do, you just have to rinse them well several times and the starches are washed away.
scarymidgets gave you some good advice too.
peace

Thanks for all of the good advice. I'll post how they turn out...At least I have the cakes even if the WBS venture is a flop.

This is at six days - OPTIMAL conditions

Here is after a shake @ 20% colonized.

Usualy takes about 12 days, sometimes 14.

Only needs shaking ONCE - between 20 to 30% colonized.
Anymore shaking (imho) slows it all down.

Thanks Agar,
I thought my WBS was going slow...your photos confirmed it. Do you think there's any hope for these to colonize ?

I guess I may have messed them up by shaking them to soon.

Don't be so quick to blame yourself. Looks like you got every thing right.
Sometimes some spore solutions or w/e are faster than others. It's just a natural occurance.
Anyway, your brf jars are aggressive  so, it is apparent you're doing everything right, just let them take they're course.

Good Luck  :peace:

Multispore inoculation can have weird timing.

Sometimes it takes a week - before you even see germination.

Once it goes - it grows. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow.

Differing spore age, strain, moisture, media & other variables ALL have a lot to do with it.

Yours should be fine, just don't shake them - more than needed.

i wonder if simmering also makes wbs susceptible to contams which might explain my high jar turnover.

That growth looks very slow to me. My pint jars of WBS only take 5-6 days with LC... 2-3days til 30% then 2-3days til finish after the shake. Did you use LC or multi-spore blackcat? I thought I remembered you asking about LC not too long ago?

Hey Pcubmycol,
The WBS was injected with spore syringe into tyvek covered hole in lid.

I've not tried the LC I started yet.
