Panaeolus subbalteatus in my lawn?
    #4366122 - 07/03/05 12:37 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I was just out walking in my lawn and a saw these mushrooms. When I bent down to check them out I thought they were just some Panaeolus foenisecii but they had a ring around them, giving me some hope they might be Pan subbs. I'm working on the spore print right now (hoping for black), but what do you think from the pictures?

Theyre a common pan subb look alike, they grow all over in boise. II still dont know what the hell they are.

Yeah, sorry about the pictures, I can't get my camera to take clear pictures even on the highest resolution!? If the spore print is black though, Pan subbs?

They are more than likely Panaeolina foenisecii.. The ring around the cap margin is a common feature of that species also.

The ones I find have a black spore print too. Theyre not pan subs though, trust me, ive had numerous bio-assays. Theyre so common here too, allllll over the grass. they coulda fooled any mycologist into thinking they were pan subbs.

Yeah, haha the print turned out brown anyway so they're definately not Pan subbs. The ring also disapeared after a while, what's that about?

As the specimens dry and/or age, the cap fades to a dry straw looking color. Brown spore print would definitely indicate foenisecii.

So I might find some Pan subbs without a distinct ring?

Couldnt they be PAN COMPs if they had a black spore print. I know there is debate over the activity of Pan Comps. but I think they are active, and through my expirience of picking, printing, preparing, and ingesting them, I am a supporter that they are active.

Yep.

The ones I find often have a very indistinct to nonexistent ring.

The major difference in all the pictures of Pan subbs I see and the mushrooms I find is the thickness of the stems. Do subbs have a fairly stick stem.

Thanks  It's alot of work but I'm taking it one day at a time. It'll be up right for 2005 weilii season. I just finished the neighborhood hunting tips, check it out and if you can put www.weilii.com in your sig, its hard getting sites up on their feet as far as people knowing about them (=

I found some other mushrooms that I thought were Pan subbs the other day, they had a very distinct wring much more than the pictures above and had black spore prints.
