papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum pic

well my front step poppy finally bloomed, and its a lovely, full pink peoniflorum.

and now have no idea where the seed came from. it certainly diddn't come from the bulk seed of albums and nigrums i sowed with wild abbandon.
i cant even immagine, perhaps it came from the mystery pods i got in the city.

Nice .

Most of the poppies around here have stopped, or nearly stopped, flowering. I'm going to go and get myself some pods soon :smile2:.

im unsure of its alkaloid content, it is of course, PURELY ornamental.
that said, FOAF reports these to be medium on the opium scale.
higher than giganthemums by pod weight
lower than nigrums, which, im told are potent.
and as was mentioned earlier in another thread, less potent than albums,
which are grown for opium, wheras nigrums are grown for seed.
peoniflorums are grown almost exclusively as ornamentals, thogh some partake in the tea of the pod, or the floral arangement therof. the come in several color variants.
giganthemums are probably nothing more than some bastard strain that is grown in perfect soil and planted in the fall for maximum size. im growing some from very large pods, but the size of the actual plants is nothing special, what really matters is growing conditions.
generally tho, larger pods have a lower alkaloid content by weight. but a larger mass of opium overall.
IT WOULD SEEM
im not really going from any sort of scientific info.
mostly heresay and observation.

oh yeas, and if youre using compost, USE LIME!!!
dont make my mistake. i got tons of poppies that arent getting enough out of the compost because its too acidic.
basically, thousands of cabages that are over a foot tall, and are showing no buds at all. forget tillers.
if they DO flower, it wont be for a while, ive added lime the other day. powdered limestone, spread between plants.
maybe now they can grow stronger.

Yeah. They work but it's doubtful from one plant. Maybe if you wait till it has five or six pods and they have time to mature a bit.

Mitchnast, you are right. Everyone growing poppies should use lime, chalk or bone meal. Anything to basify the soil.

Ab, AFOF, did some extreme guerrilla farming. Spreading seeds everywhere. From that we have seen that the best plants grow on lose, loamy, sandy soil. Even broken rubble, that has lime in it with the cement, is a very good medium for poppies. On the other hand, dense clay is bad. The roots cannot penetrate the soil. And peat of turf (boggy shit) is the worst of all. Plant will grow, but reach no more height than about 10 cm. The plants cannot suck up nutrients with the pH so low. I expect compost to be the same.

So lose sandy, loamy soil with compost and lots of LIME will give you the biggest, fattest pods!
