This is the method I would suggest for smaller amounts.. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/723303/page//fpart/1/vc/1
In terms of doing 55gallons.. hmmm... I know I read a log where someone turned up their water heater to the highest setting.. and filled up a trash can... But I can't find it again. Maybe someone else has that link.
I would ask Agar.. he is the poo Man.
Good luck, ~Quiescence~

I read a post a while back about someone filling up a large metal trashcan and placeing it above an adjustable range type burner fed by a propane tank, I think its used for camping.

I just posted on how I did mine-- I've got something growing check out the photos and I will continue the thread tommorow if anyone wants to know how I did it. It only took about 8 days total from leaching to fruit. Check it out -- I am very happy-- I am a newb and got impatient and live in SW fl and also knew there had to be a way to grow some fast . I don't know how many I will get but we'll see. I am looking for help to keep them fruiting. I just grew the manure in tubs like I saw in the cultivation forums and read everything about cakes and casing, and put 2 and 2 together. At least if these are confirmed what I think they are I did something right. I think I have Copllandia cyan and cubes -- let me get the confirmation and I will give more details.
sorry about this post I thought you meant growing immdiately from the poo. I plan on just moving my poo cakes to a shady place and just put layers of hay and mushroom compost from Home Depot. I am definitely not boiling it.

Hey, this is how I do mine. Kinda of like what you might try only in a larger scale. I do about 25 pound batches.
I use a ten gallon pot,
and stainless steel trash can from Wally World,
After my poo/verm is hydrated, I fill the trash can,
I place a spacer in the bottom so the trash can doesn't sit directly on the pot,
I have the pot of water already at 170 degrees before I lowwer the trash can in,
I like doing it like this because I can stir the poo while warming and get it up to temp real quick. I just check it with the candy thermometer.
After a hour at temp., I take the trash can out, place in sink(sprayed with some bleach water) and cover with pot.
Works great. And pretty fast with being able to get the poo temp up so quick.
I think if you expanded on this concept a little you should be able to use a 55 gallon drum. I hope so as I'm planning on it,lol.
Hope this helps and let me know how you wind up doing it.

If you have the means, room & need.
Find a dead upright freezer (FREE - from appliance repair places).
Find a small ceramic heater.
Place heater in freezer, set thermostat to 170F
Hydrate h/poo mix, place in lots of trays - 4 inches deep.
Place trays in freezer, turn on heater & close door.
Tight seals will turn it into a sauna.
Use thermometer probe to monitor substrate internal temps.
Heat up to 165F & leave it for a day.
There is your 250 lbs of pasturized h/poo.
No muss, no fuss, no BS.

165F water works - no matter what size. So long as you can get the temp right & maintain it. But, let me tell you, fill huge bags with h/poo, submerse in hot water & they get REAL HEAVY - REAL QUICK.
Then, draining them is a real PAIN IN THE ASS. On top of that, if drained (outside - in the summer time) & cooled withing 15 miles of a single gnat------it will find the bags & lay eggs in it . Which - results in larva & gnats in the substrate.

what do you think about using maybe four or five pillow sacks with poo so they arent that heavy.... as for draining how about if i enclose my porch in plastic sheeting and seal all the edges with my impulse sealer, then make sure that no bugs are around and removing the pillow sacks to drain and cool in this "sheeted room". do you think this will work?

Only thing I would change is. When you pull bags from hot water, QUICKLY side each inside a very heavy duty plastic garbage bag, with both bag necks facing up. Then pull inner bag (pillow case holding da poo)up away from the bottom the outer bag & cinch the bags closed with a heavy cord.
Then hang the bags - somehow.
That will keep out gnats & airborne contaminates, give the inner bag room to drain into the lower bag & you will not have poo water draining all over the place - as it gets trapped in the lower bag.
LOL, reminds me of the old days - when agar filled a gunny sack with DRY h/poo, slid it into a 55 gallon drum, fired up the propane burner, heated that big puppy up - let it simmer @ 165F for hours.
Then - agar could NOT LIFT the gunny sack out of the drum, as the sumbitch weighted a lot more wet - than dry.
Then - agar quickly builds tripod, hooks a come-a-long to top of tripod & bag neck, winches gunny sack out of drum.
agar stands there proudly looking at his accomplishment,
.....................................................................
.....................................................................
.....................................................................
.....................................................................
.....................................................
then bottom seam on burlap bag tears open & 300 lbs of steaming h/poo explodes out of it.
Now - that is what you call..... a SHIT STORM.

That's funny Agar. I was going to have a basket made to fit inside the drum. Hook it up to a tripod and raise the whole basket out. Actually I'll probably just wait until that compost is ready, lol.

Nope, fun day.
Fun night was:
AA 931 full of h/poo substrate bags - on kitchen stove - getting sterilized.
Long day - tired - had a couple J/D & cokes, a few bong hits, sat on couch, watching SNL, waiting for PC run to finish.
.................>...........

......>>>.............>>>>
FELL ASLEEP.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

PC overheated,
overpressure plug blew out (sound like hand grenade)
blew out h/poo soup out over pressure plug hole
, all over stove & kitchen.

thats soooo funny in a fucked up way... good on ya though for learning for us
so i thought about using a cherry picker or a pulley system, but i tihnk using the plastic bag idea is awesome... about how heavy would you say a wet pillowcase about half full would weigh?

That is why I now pasturize - as in this POST. Takes a bit to set up - but once done... it is SWEET. No fuss, no muss, no mess. Plus, if you use trays - once cooled to room temps - they are ready to add spawn to - on the spot.
Depends on pillow case size. They are heavy & SOGGY - let me tell you. Also, plain as day - bags are HOT. So - handling is a PITA. Once out of the water, you usualy have to move them - to a spot to hang & drain. Think about that factor (wheelbarrow is handy).
Plan well - otherwise - it can get messy & turn out - bad.

Hey Agar, do you also use the freezer for fruiting? I could be wrong, but I think I saw another post you had out there, where you had a humidifier hooked up to the freezer. Would that work if you had a fridge set for the proper temps with a humidifier pumping in the moisture?
