Casing layer questions. Please give me your opinions!
    #4363774 - 07/02/05 06:48 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

In the past I have been using a 50/50 casing of peat and verm with brf cakes. I am currently switching to poo/straw and read many varied opinions on casing layers. In the bulk neglect report he uses a 75 coir/25 verm mix. Other people seem to think that too much coir causes overlay and opt for a the same 50/50 type casing as I was using before. Can anyone please give me some more insight into what kind of casings are best for this and the reasons why?

My preferance is 45% peat, 45%Verm & 10% Coir. I ph adjust the peat before mixing them togather, then add some oyster shell flour - as a long term buffering agent.

If you can't find oyster shell pieces at a local feed store, you can probably fine crushed coral at a local fish store. Crushed coral (aka aragonite) makes a perfect long-term buffer, as good if not better than oyster shells.
