The truth about mail irradiation
    #435197 - 10/24/01 10:43 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all,

I just spoke with the National Control Center for the U.S. Postal Service in Washington, DC. They directed me to the engineer who is dealing with the manufacturers of the irradiator devices. A manufacturer representative should contact me in the near future about my concerns over destruction of medicinal mushroom living cultures and spores by irradiation processes.

Remember, this doesn't affect this community only. Small businesses that encourage cultivation of precious medicinal species (i.e. Paul Stamets' Fungi Perfecti, the Mushroom People, etc.) could be seriously hampered by this effort to cleanse pieces of mail.

What I can tell you with certainty, is that these machines are not in place yet on a widespread basis. Perhaps postal centers in NY and DC have some operating already due to immediate need.

I will post more when I hear from the manufacturer. I can only guess that hundreds or more have called about the effects of this process. Who knows when I'll get word on this, but when I do, I'll spread the word here.

Sorry to cross-post this, by the way -- but it's important, and I don't know how many of you browse the basic cultivation forum.

My pleasure folks.

Now, while he/she didn't post the actual e-mail, night train in the mushroom cultivation forum posted this:

I emailed the us postal service last night concerning this. They said that there are no plans to implement irradiation to sterilize mail in the near future. There is a lot of concern over this by many other businesses and industries, not just the omc. As lots of rather large business make their money by sending live product. Gourmet spores, cultures, plant seeds, etc. They said they are working on a system to help prevent the spread of any infectious diseases sent through the mail, but have nothing in the works as of yet, and that if there is, it will most likely be something that will kill anything on the package/envelope. Therefore not really protecting someone actually opening a package/envelope with whatever inside.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for the call. Hopefully, I will get a response to this, but I'd imagine thousands of people from all types of commerce have pitched a fit about this. When I hear more, I'll post it.

Good luck!

Maybe they can kill all the contams, without killing the spores. ;)

well, the anthrax that they are trying to kill, is a spore. so that is doubtful.

An idea could be creating a special mail service for living cultures, i think it's not hard, just a stamp saying "live culture" is enough for whom recieves it, if your expecting a live culture then is what you get, if not call the cops.... call the cops ? Did i say that ? Jesus, this war is fucking with my brains!!

Peace,

I've never heard of a radiation that will not go through paper. Am I the only one who finds that a tad odd?

Thanks for the feedback, Psilocyber. In the past, so many biological companies and food producers have lobbied against this practice that I think although the USPS claims it's going to install 250 machines, it's going ot be a hassle for THEM not us.

I'm curious about what Paul Stamets thinks, too. Hey Paul, if you're reading this, please reply using a crafty screen name like PStamets or something like that so we'll never be able to guess it's you -- and post your thoughts. Heh. ;)

By the way, I think it's smart of you to insist on printing return addresses on Spore Works shipments. And I love the new look, by the way.

"well, the anthrax that they are trying to kill, is a spore. so that is doubtful. "

well anthrax is an endospore, so its alot harder to kill then a spore, a endospore is very(most) heat resistant as opposed to a spore, which is quite suseptable to heat. They serve slightly diff purposes as well. I'm not trying to be an ass just giving correct info.
