tri state area, need id
    #4363043 - 07/02/05 02:40 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Near the coastline in the northeastern u.s. I found these in my backyard. Lets label the smaller ones species (a), and the two larger ones, species (b). The smaller ones smell like mushrooms in the store, however the larger more bell shaped ones do not smell like anything. The smaller ones dry to a much lighter brown/tan. Neither of them seem to bruise at all.
Species (a) has a dark brown/black spore print. It may jnust be seem brown from not a dark enough print. THe gills are adnate and brown in color. THe stem is smooth and after i dried it for a couple hrs it snapped and looked like theres a little hollow in the middle of it.
Species (b) has a light brow/ rusty red sprore print. The stem was smooth and not hollow, however it is very thin so hard to tell. The gills are a rusty brown color.
If more information is required please let me know, or if the pics are bad. THanks for the help

all the little ones actually bruise to that light brown color, the stems are white before handling at all. I dont know if its typical bruising. As soon as u apply pressure to the stem, wherever your finger was is now light brown instead of white

The bottom right in the top (and top left one in the sixth from the top) pic look sorta like subbalteatus but the look a little light in coloration to me and a brown sporepirint would probably make them foesensecci(sp).

the literature about foenisecci is quite scary/confusing. Any idea of all the other little brown ones. After they are dried the foenisecci appears identical to the others in the picture. All a light tan color.

You have found Panaeolina foenisecii and Conocybe lactea, the two most common species of lawn mushrooms. Neither is worth eating for any reason.
