Fire in the sky!
    #4362675 - 07/02/05 09:41 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Last night about half an hour before the firework started, it got really windy, cold and rainy.  There were thousands of people waiting on the hill for the fireworks to start and everyone with babies and small kids started heading back home.  It ended up clearing up just in time for the fireworks... and started up again right afterwards.

A Canada Day gift from a higher power?  It was CFB Petawawa's 100 year anniversary and it was a pretty big deal.  I think that there are still festivities going on today.  Before the fireworks started the emcee guy proposed to his girlfriend in front of everyone from here to five towns over.  It was AWESOME.  He made a speech and as soon as the fireworks started, he got down on one knee.....I almost cried, it was so sweet.  I see that kind of stuff on TV all the time, but never IRL!

After the fireworks, they had footage of our troops in Kabul doing thier Canada Day parade in thier super nice uniforms.  OMG, they look so awesome when they're all dressed up.  I love it!  They couldn't have fireworks in Kabul because it was a security threat, so I took some pictures to send over today, and I thought I'd show 'em to you guys too.

 :maple:

No, it's just ice cream.  Instead of scooping it, you slice it like bread... It's called Canadian Vanilla, EH!

I saw it in the grocery store and I was like "We must buy this."

Actually, Canada is an independent country from the US with our own history and culture.  Canada day is a celebration of OUR countries birthday.... not a rip off of independence day.

Quote:

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st.

:maple:

Canada Day was called 'Dominion Day' up until the 80's, I think.  Then they changed it.

I don't get it, so it's a celebration of the anniversary of the British colonies in N. America? If I'm reading that correctly, that's like anti-Independence Day.

It's not. It has nothing to do with Independence Day. NOTHING AT ALL. It's a celebration of the birth of a new nation. The fact that Canada Day and Independence day are so close together on the calendar is purely coincidental.

Stop raining on our parade, or dubya's gonna invade.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic. So it means the creation of a a British Canada years ago? So it's a commemoration of creation, correct?

Wait a minute... the Canadians like us enough to create a holiday for the U.S. Independance Day? All because we gained our freedom?

Interesting that Canada's really just the 51st state, celebrating our holidays and copying our styles.
