Lion guardians
Description: ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) -- Police say three lions rescued a 12-year-old girl kidnapped by men who wanted to force her into marriage, chasing off her abductors and guarding her until police and relatives tracked her down in a remote corner of Ethiopia.
"They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest,
I wish I had that kind of lion.

This is a very strange story.
Were the lions somehow able to tell the evil men had "marriage" on their minds?
If so, did they understand they should protect the girl until the good men arrived?
Lions turned Lassie sounds a little far fetched.

I believe lions simply responded to the pain of a young human. It's instinctive, they would do the same for their own young if it cried for pain. I don't think they mistakened it for a lion, that is to farfetched because lion has its smell and they know how a lion looks like. I think they were reacting instinctive and felt protective. It's a sideeffect of their own motherly instinct.
But non the less, it is one of many miracles of nature

It is far fetched. Most lions would respond to the "pain" of any infant that wasn't a lion cub by eating it. Yummy!

I read once about a grizzly bear who made a pet out of a stray kitten that came into it's cage. It even gave the kitten part of it's food at mealtime and would not let it's handlers near the kitten, so they let it stay.

Have you ever seen Lassie? Timmy always had to be rescued.
This story sounds pretty bizarre to me. It sounds similar to the killer hyena story where the African natives thought the hyena was "possessed" and were still afraid to return to their homes after the devil beast was killed. Here they assume a lot for the lion's behavior. As another poster mentioned, perhaps the lions were waiting for a meal...

waiting for a meal? The meal was right there
Sitting there with a wounded girl, they could have eaten her. The whole thing lasted for half a day, they could have eaten her in first 10 minutes

I just flat out don't believe it. Not the way the story is told. I'm not saying it couldn't be true. Lions are serious predators.

Animals such as gorillas have been known to be quite gentle and protective of kids that have fallen into their zoo cage.
The lion is not usually so gentle. I would be concerned if the cats just laid around watching things. If the "bad" men left and the girl was alone, do you think they would let her come up and pet them in thanks?
My point is, these Africans seem to read a lot into animals "intent". The devil hyena was a similar situation.

"OK then it didn't happen."
Something happened, and then someone wrote their interpretation of it. Much like many news stories that should be taken with a grain of salt. The word "story" is telling.
