contamination before sterilization
    #4361801 - 07/02/05 01:38 AM (12 years, 23 days ago)

hello, i made 24 jars early yesterday morning. didnt PC them, just put them under my bed to sterilize tonight. half of the jars became very warm (the ones i hadnt put tinfoil on yet), and they have some faint white spots of something in them (im pretty sure its just water condensation, because theyre warm) but im thinking maybe bacteria is what made them warm. anyway if i PC these guys right now, would they be safe to inoculate?

What did you use as substrate? I would sterilize the jars as soon as I put the crap in them. Even though the PC process kills everything, I wouldn't want any buildup of possible bacteria byproducts in the jars. If it's only been a day should be fine.....what are you waiting for? PC 'em and inoculate

im cookin em right now, they are brf/verm and some of them are brf/rye flour/verm. One jar does have some visible white growth, actually looks like mycellium, but its only like a 1/2 cm in diameter. whatever this is, would pc'ing kill it?
** edit** err not kill it, i think it should do that. but would its "body" be left behind and would this hurt anything?

what if i waited another day, because i can only do 12 tonight, for the remaining 12. what would be like the definite cutoff point for when they shouldnt be used

im just gonna toss the ones that had visible growth. the ones that had tin foil on them overnight and didnt have white shit on them seemed fine to me, theyre cooling right now. ill let yall know what contams i get, since ive found a handful of threads which ask this question, and they all recommend against letting em sit unsterilized, but the only person i saw who actually went through with sterilizing the jars after they had been sitting showed pics of fully colonized cakes coming from them. he didnt go on to show any fruits though...
