Sibirian explosion
    #4360831 - 07/01/05 06:25 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

What's you personal theory?

Before we step into any discussion, a little reminder of some of the unusual aspects of it, the aspects that keep it a subject of discussions in the first place:

-It was the single most powerfull exlosion in recorded human history (including termo nuclear bombs)
-The blast (light in the sky) was visible from London.
-The soil was radioactive but the radioactivity keeps decreasing.
-The explosion happened not on ground, but in the air, a few kilometers above ground (I believe it was about 7km (thats about 4 miles), not sure)

so what do you think about it?

I think it was probably a large comet that exploded in the air over Tunguska. It started fragmenting and exploded before ever hitting the ground due to friction in the atmosphere. That would explain why there is no crater.

What's your take on it?

something like that I guess...

that pretty much would solve a few things from the list:
like the altitude of the explosions

But what did this comet contain that could cause radiation?

I have to say up front that I don't know much of the science involved, but freaky things have been known to happen when you get something that big moving that fast through the atomsphere. I found this about a meteorite impact recently :

"..Lake Tagish in the Yukon on 18 January last year. An object of around five metres in diameter exploded at an altitude of 25 kilometres, causing a long and bright fireball, a loud bang, a shower of fragments, and an electro magnetic pulse which caused a temporary loss of power transmission on the ground below."

Maybe someone more knowledgable about the science involved can weigh in on the radiation aspect..

are you serious? Didn't you hear it? I was just taking a shower that day when suddenly....
oh wait that was not me, it was my grand grand grand.....pa

Seriously, it was in 1908 I believe when there was this huge explosion in the Sibiria that was vitnessed even by people all the way up to London (it was night in London) It was stronger than any explosion caused by any bomb. In fact it had the strenght of many many hydrogen bombs put together.
The whole area had twisted trees in a circle for kilometers around the center of the explosion, but the center was not on ground, but high in the air.

It was hard to tell what had really happened because the surrounding 100 000 square kilometers were not inhabited exept for animals and
some primitive locals (eskims?)

Anyway, the locals said all kinds of strange stories about it.

Here are some of these stories:
...the forest turned to a green glow and the sky turned to night and stars were visible for a second
or:
...the falling ball of fire had been intercepted by another smaller ball that came from ground, so the explosion took place.
or:
...the big fire ball changed directions while falling down

It is difficult to extract any hard evidence from these people because they are full of myths and stuff like that and they consider it something godly or whatever, so they are not really credible. They might as well say that it had eyes and was the face of god himself.

Anyway, the animals aviod the place right now, radiation is detectable and the soil has strange magnetic properties.

All kinds of teams were sent to investigate. Russians are still doing that. A recent Croatian expedition went there too to meet with the Russians, but they didn't bring much official data back because russians were not all that open about it, at least not on the record.

Meteorite...it was a typical meteoric explosion...but a large one.

This was probably caused by a comet impacting the earth. Comets are made of dusty water ice, so it would have vaporized on impact with the atmosphere before reaching the Earth's surface. This accounts for the lack of a crater. The sky glow for a few days after the event was probably due to the dust released from the cometary ice during the impact.

Or maybe it was the Reptilian Masters of the Galaxy at war with the Giant Spaghetti Monsters of Alpha Centauri?

Many of the reports say the sky glowed redish like it does during a sunset. It was probably caused by the dust released from the impact.

More than likely a comet. Composed of ice dust that upon coming to earth at such a high velocity melted and impacted creating a large detonation but no crater. The radioactivity could be from space.

More than likely a comet.

The expeditions that have studied the area haven't found any unusual radiation or magnetic fields that I'm aware of.

Yeah my bet is an exploding comet.

Unless you really want a wild explanation...then I'll go with "a small chuck of antimatter" :smirk:

That's strange, I've heard many times that readings were taken from 60's up to now and that radiation is decreasing every decade

The antimatter theory is unlikely because if such chunks existed, they would be indirectly observable from the radiation they'd emit as they traveled through space.

The idea that a chunk of antimatter could exist inside a galaxy full of regular matter is a little far-fetched.

Chances are the antimatter would encounter some normal matter and annihilate long before it had a chance to run in to the Earth.

I'm convinced it wasn't antimatter but was in fact something to do with the Giant Spaghetti Monsters of Alpha Centauri.  :smirk:
