Using peat moss for outdoor grow:
    #4359871 - 07/01/05 04:12 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Sorry for yet another outdoor grow post guys!

So Moe's Outdoor Tek says:
"10. Finally, cover with a thin layer of hay and water but don't drown it unless you live in arizona."

-Can one throw an half inch of peat moss on top of the outdoor patch to substitute the thin lay of hay/straw?
-Would the peat moss need to be soaked in water before hand?
-Will less watering be required if one were to put a layer of peat moss on top?
-Will the peat moss be beneficial to the outdoor patch? How?

Thank you,

-Nickster-

I think that tek uses hay in the final layer because that is/was what was best available for him. I see no problem in replacing the FINAL layer with peat though. It should be wetted down a bit and I think it would be beneficial by keeping the moisture level a bit more steady than hay.

thats just added nutrients and water for the shrooms to grow from....its not even necessary unless you want MORE and BIGGER(and who wouldnt).

in my weed smoking paranoia days i had two tubs of straight cased grain growing indoor, then got paranoid of cops driving by all the time and dug up a small bed and then covered with the plain old dirt that i dug up making the hole and they started popping up 2 weeks later.  they were really short but dense fruits. caps opened to be huge tho.  The shitty thing about such a lamely done grow is i had to water it daily, if not twice a day.  the "mud" would just dry up with the quickness, so i had to keep it moist.

so really, the point of the straw and hay is for extra moisture so the shrooms get as big as they can be.  peat moss would work fine covering some bulk substrate,  id use over an inch though....probably 2inches would be great.  just keep it moist

Sweet. Thanks a ton guys, just needed some verification from others before my friend decides to throw a couple inches of peat on top of his out door grow.

excellent idea, folks. If you hadn't read it somewhere else, i'd say you're a genius. REALLY this is the best casing around here in the lush forests of the pacific northwest... I'm about to go get some myself....
ANy outdoor situation really benefits from moss, i mean, it's alive for christ's sake, and it's free.
And you should take a bucket with you to the rubbermaid every once in a while to moisten the moss. Just pick it up by the handfuls, dunk, and squeeze out the excess.
Very effective.

I built my outdoor box about 3 ft x 5 ft and 6 inches deep. Fresh horse manure layered with straw. About 8 quarts spawned. A friend gave me some fully colonized jars but were neglected for 9 months. I just soaked them and then crumbled. I will see if they are still good.

My question is about the top layer. What is a good depth of coverage to use. I currently have 1/2" of coconut fiber that I found. There is a lot of poo and straw and substrate below so I am guessing maybe a thicker top layer? Maybe more coir or peat moss? Another 1" or 2"? I live in SoCal so it is hot and dry but this patch is in a very shaded spot (except for early morning when I took these pics). It stays pretty moist back there.
