WBS mixed 2:1 w/ water?
    #4357550 - 07/01/05 01:20 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I just read in the FAQ section that a good WBS tek is basically 1 big cup of WBS with 1/2 cup water. It said 250ml WBS and 120ml water. I usually use a 3:1 ratio, but it colonizes kind of slow. Would this 2:1 tek maybe speed up my colonization times without causing my jars to contam.?

Sounds like an awful lot of water....

I personally...

-soak 30 hr.
-rinse...rinse...then rinse...
-Then add about 20% verm....er until it looks like it'll b beautiful after pc-ing...took me about 2-3 trys to get it down right..

Works out perfect everytime now..

Esp. for my bags

I thought it sounded like a lot of water too. I don't want to mess w/ soaking, simmering, or rinsing, because ive had fine results without it. I just want to figure out the water content. Why would the FAQ section have 2 posts that say 2:1 if it's too much water? Here are the posts:

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23308

I'll probably give it a shot. It only has too much water if it's pooling after cooling from PC'ing right?

i soak for 12 to 14 hours and rinse really good then put in jars and pc!!!i put the seed in a pot to what i may use, fill with water till it is just above the seed then keep an eye on it for a few hours and the seed will rise above the water line from sucking up the water, then i do it over again this is how i know that the seed has just the right amount of water!!!good luck

i understand how to soak and simmer, but i dont want to do it. It's much easier to load the jars w/ seed and water and PC. I usually use 3:1 ratio, but read here about the 2:1 and am just wondering if anyone does it like that. i know roadkill uses 3:1, because he gave me the idea. Maybe ill try like 2.5:1 and see how that works.

Sludge, im just curious do you not drain your WBS after rinsing? Just soak, rinse, load?

I do ?

Actually I soak my WBS for 24 hours or so...

Shake the WBS in a strainer...real good.

Then take a large window screen...and lay the WBS on the screen.
How long I lay it on the window screen depends on the temp of the weather outside.

Then I load the jars...and pc them.

I just started using WBS again...I haven't used WBS in many years.

I have been a Rye Grain user...but wanted to cut my costs down...so I recently switched back to WBS.

I can't give you an exact ratio, but since you don't want to soak, this tek will probably be helpful:

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/24332

You can see his ratio is even over 1/2; it's more like 2/3!. It would probably be wise to do several jars with different ratios. On tape that will survive the PC, mark (e.g. with a sharpie) the top of the grain and the water line after knocking down the grain. After using the jars, you'll be able to tell which approximate ratio works for you and your particular brand/batch of WBS.

One of the good things about WBS is that it's pretty forgiving about the amount of water you put in.

Also, remember it's normal sometimes for jars to appear too wet with unabsorbed water fresh out of the PC. Shake them well when you get them out and check again in ~24 hours, when they've cooled.

Good luck bro, it can be done without soaking, and it's not too tough!
